I've also done crypts to create a carpet-like effect, although it does take ages unless you have the funds to go out and purchase copious amounts of them. The fine leaved ones work the best, and in some cases you might even be able to get hold of crypt seeds that you can use to start from...
Some of the coloured cory's and barbs that are availible are also coloured by injection of dye directly into their tails and other sections of their bodies too. It is sick if you ask me.
An extreme case of establishing territories maybe? I've certainly never heard of apistos eating other fish before. Well, there's a first time for everything....
A trickle system is a tank that has an extra sheet of glass inserted to seal off a section at the back of the tank. The ones we manufacture have a 4" cavity at the back where the filter is housed. There is an overflow that runs into the back where there is a plate that spreads the water over a...
Dacron padding is what we sell as padding for trickle systems. It's the same stuff they use in some doonas. We get it in massive rolls and just cut it to size. Over here it sells for around $10sqm.
While skimming through various threads, I've heard some references to using leaf litter in the substrate. I realise that the difference in water quality between different countries and areas probably makes it o.k to use in some instances, but don't you have problems with hydrogen sulphide? I...
It's true, most of the breeders I know attempt to finance their fish keeping by selling copious amounts of fish. The question is, however; Why do you keep fish?
Some of the best tanks I have ever seen run on box filters. I believe there was a similar debate when they first brang out wet/dry trickle filters, and it is interesting to note that trickle systems used in plated aquaria is not always such a good idea. I would imagine that using a skimmer...
Personally, I've never had any problems keeping blues and bolivians together. My bane has been trying to keep those nasty little pictus with anything softer than a rock. Nassssty Pictusssessss, we hatessss them.
You shouldn't have too many problems crossing colours if the fish are of the same species- it's how we get most of the new colour verieties. In some instances (I don't know if it's been done with dwarfs), fish will even breed between species. Livebearers are renowned for this, and it is also...
You could maybe try some Julidichromis if you can find them. They aren't usually too hard to get- ask your LFS, I'm sure they won't mind getting some in.
Depending on the source of your rams, under stress there is a virus that they may carry. People I have talked to refer to them as blood viruses (apparently there are three), and they tend to kick in if your rams have travelled a long way, or your tank conditions are not to their liking. As I...
I don't mean to sound arrogant, but I'd just like to point out- If your fish and plants are not all from the same country, or indeed area, then it's not a biotope.
Sodium will not bind to the metal ions that 'classically' make up your water hardness (ie. Mg, Fe, Cu), as they all posess a positive charge. However, it will bind to carbonate ions under certain conditions. If you don't use CO2, there is probably some slim chance that you water will be...
