    panduro behavior observation

What I like the most about cichlids is their interesting and individual behavior. I thought I'd share an unexpected observation. It's probably not all that uncommon but I thought a few of you might be interested. So for more a a year now, I've had 6 adult wild caught panduros (2m4f) in a 30...

    tannins and EC

My combo meter is still working great also. Easy to use. Easy to calibrate. After all this time my battery is currently reading 92%! Michael BTW - Ted how much is the replacement probe? How do you know when it needs replacing?

    tannins and EC

I was reading this old post about EC and TDS, etc. I was curious about the last post (by tjudy) about tannins raising the EC. What are experiences of others? Ted did you learn anything further about this? How does this relate to KH? Here is a link to that old post...

    sexing sp. "Apache"

Can anyone out there tell me how to tell the females from the males? I have 6 of them (wildcaught) and none have black on their ventral fins. They might be all males. However occasionally, a couple get dark ventrals fins once in awhile. This is especially true when I first turn on the tank...

    A sp Maulbruter

My Maulbruters also produced smaller batches of fry, but they spawned more frequently and matured earlier than other apistos I've kept. The brooding females are extremely aggressive towards the male. Usually (but not always), I had to remove the male once they fry became free swimming or he...

setting up peat filtration on an established tank

In my experience the pH remains very stable using peat water, but this could be related to the chemistry of my water from the start. I've heard that using CO2 can cause pH to spike, but I don't use it myself. Michael

setting up peat filtration on an established tank

Hi cubsfan, You don't need an extra tank. I use a 30 gallon plastic trash barrel to mix my peat water. It's inexpensive and just takes up a small amount of mostly verticle space. I add a 5 gallon bucket of pure Canadian Sphagum Peat Moss to the barrel, then finish filling it with dechlor'ed...

    mortanhaler

Thanks everyone for your input. I've got a pair coming next week. When I get them, I'll post pictures if I can. We'll see which type they turn out to be. Michael

    wild apisto. vs. tank-bred apisto

I have 2 pair od wild caught cacatuoides that have an occasional fleck of black like they were sprinkled with black pepper. I was told that only wild caught cacs have this. I was disappointed that these flecks of black weren't passed on to their young. One of the females has an interesting...

    Tap water concern

Hi Ted, I see that you're in Packer territory now! I've been a Packer fan since I was at least 10 yo. Perhaps that's what is afflicting Bret Farve right now. He's been looking a bit rusty lately. But seriously...I wish you good luck with your water problem. Probably not much you can do...

    mortanhaler

Anyone know anything about this apisto? It's from Peru. I guess it's also sold commercially as "Lyre-Tail" nijsseni and/or panduro. Pictures anyone? Thanks, Michael

    Apisto pandurini

Hi William, 5.5 pH is good for baenchi also. I like to use coconut shell halves. Just saw a coconut in half, scrape out all the flesh and drill an entrance hole. I attach Java Moss and Java Ferns to the outside of the shell and in a short time you hardly see the shell at all. When I gave...

    Apistogramma sp. Maulbruter

Yes they can be aggressive. Starting with 4 to 6 juvies is probably the best way to go. This allows them to choose their own mates, increasing the chance of compatability. You can usually sell the extra fish to a LFS. They usually pay a little more for a pair. Michael

    Apistogramma sp. Maulbruter

Hi Adam, No problem getting the fry to take microworms or BBS or any other starter food. If well fed with regular water changes the fry grow fairly quickly and mature young. The females are extremely aggressive when caring for a spawn. The females are also very aggressive with other females...

    Atahualpa

Hi BillyBlanks, I have a pair of atahualpa in a 10 gallon with no trouble. The true test is if you plan to spawn them. If you do, be sure to provide many hiding places for the male in case the female gets a bit carried away. As long as the male has a couple places to keep out of sight of the...

    Camera"s!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DVD Camcorders I just re-reviewed the Panasonic DVD Camcorders on the web and decided to upgrade my choice so far. Earlier I hadn't seriously considered the Panasonic VDR-M95 Camcorder because the suggested retail price was so much higher than what I planned to spend ($999). However I found a...

    Camera"s!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Myself I want a digital camera. I have an older Sony 1.3 megapixal that takes fair size pictures. The problem I have though, is that between the time I press the button and the camera records the image, the fish has changed position or left the picture completely! Anyhow, I don't want anything...

Hi Tara, I've heard of that being done, though I've never done it myself. It should work. It doesn't sound very attractive though. I'd set up a 10 gallon for the extra barbs and tetras, keeping only 1 or 2 in with the cacs. You still may lose some fry, but the parents should be able to protect...

Hi Tara, Cacs are fairly hardy, especially with regular water changes. They'll do fine with you tetras and probably also you barbs as long as they aren't too big. However, I haven't had any myself for many years, if I remember right, tiger barbs are notorious fin nippers. This may not even be...

    20 Long

Hi Tank, Orange Flash Cacs would be a good choice. You can probably keep a trio (1m2f) in a 20 long. As for the cardinals & corys, if you want to raise fry, the corys are out and no more than 1 cardinal or most any other tetra. If you don't plan to raise fry, cards and corys are fine. Get...
