    Diagnosing Sick Panduros

My Mildred (a. cacatuoides) just died of the same kind of thing. She started floating at the water surface yesterday evening, so I took her out and put her in a hospital tank, but she was dead when I came home from work this afternoon. :frown:

    Juvenile cacatuoides sexing

I have 60 of that size (and can't sex them yet either), and they eat flakes and enthusiastically chomp on the shrimp chunks as well.

    How to icrease survival rate?

I have very little experience (2 batches of cacatuoides fry), but I have 60 left over from both spawnings, which I hear is a really good number. I fed liquifry in the first few weeks and I have javamoss which is teeming with "dust". Mine were in the 20 gallon community tank for the first 3...

    Mikrogeophagus ramirezi - opinions

Heh, I don't have a lot of choice. I picked Sid and Nancy up Friday afternoon. Came home this evening from a session and they're spawning!

    Mikrogeophagus ramirezi - opinions

Ooo, lovely. I caught them cleaning up a rock this evening. They've only been in the tank for a day! Funnily enough, they are extremely popular here, but their availability in LFS is patchy.

    Mikrogeophagus ramirezi - opinions

He is a bit skinny, and also quite shy compared to her. He has had a good feed today though. I'm looking at opinions on form and colour I suppose. Do these look good enough to do some decent breeding with? A good starter pair you might say? They're Dutch bred, young adults and the best of the...

    Mikrogeophagus ramirezi - opinions

I would like some objective opinions on these two please! (Click on the picture to be taken to a bigger picture.) This was taken with aquarium light from above and flash from below. Nothing else done to the pictures except resize.

    Sudden cacatuoides death

Other than the fry, nothing has been introduced. The fry were born in the tank. My tank hasn't changed (other than fry) for the last 4 months, since I got the cacatuoides. Mildred isn't looking too good either, she is very swollen with eggs and in breeding colours, but no interested in caves...

    Sudden cacatuoides death

Yesterday afternoon as I fed my fish, everything was fine with George, my cactuoides male. He chased the food, flared at other fishes, swam around normally. Yesterday evening he was dead and shredded to bits. I am slightly at a loss as to what might have happened to him. I suspect he was dead...

    New cacatuoides and immediately fry!

And another question! Some of my fry have a continuous line along their side. Some of my fry have no line, but a dot on their flank. Is this normal in their development or does it mean anything? I'm so chuffed watching these little things grow and develop, they're soooooo cute!

At what age/size and colour question

Oooo, yellow gold are pretty! I have another tank..... oooooooo.

At what age/size and colour question

Thanks Mike, you really are a fount of knowledge! And the colour issue? I have some that have gone entirely transparent/milky white-ish and I was wondering if it had to do with what I read in another thread (http://www.forum.apistogramma.com/showthread.php?t=7623) or if it is a normal stage...

At what age/size and colour question

First off, at what age or size are ap. cacatuoides ready to go to the shop? The LFS will take any I want to sell, but they're about 5 weeks old now, about 1cm in size. I thought at 3 or 4 months, but is that right? And some of my fry are turning see-through. A lot of them are still grey with...

    Q: Cacatuoides breeding

So I managed to catch 10 fry and put them in the Aqua40. Now I don't see them anywhere anymore! There are plenty of places to hide for them there, and I'm continuing to add food to the tank, but I'm not sure they survived the transplant. However, at last count Mildred still had 25 fry left! I...

    Q: Cacatuoides breeding

I have three Corydoras aeneus and 9 Corydoras pygmaeus. I read that the aeneus would be the biggest threat to the eggs, but they stay far, far away from Mildred. The pygmaeus are too small to eat the fry. Yeah, even catching the big ones can be very challenging in this tank. I'll give that a...

    Q: Cacatuoides breeding

The tank is 80cm long and heavily planted, there is a good picture here: http://corine.judkins.org/the80literaquari/page1.html There are two logs, two large clumps of java moss, lots and lots of hiding places for them. I think I'll try and catch the fry out tomorrow, they can go into...

    Q: Cacatuoides breeding

Ohhhhh. And if I move George temporarily, will that make any difference? I have an Aqua40 that he could move into. The fry do have plenty of places to hide, I still have 20-25 left at the last count and this is a community tank. Will they know enough to hide from their mother? Will she stop...

    Q: Cacatuoides breeding

Uhm guys? How soon after a spawning will a female be ready to spawn again? Mildred's fry are getting more and more independent, it has now been 10 days since I first saw Mildred venture out of the pot with the fry and today she was displaying for George. Is that normal? Am I going to have...

    New cacatuoides and immediately fry!

I had a better chance at counting them today and I counted 30 fry. The female is really very diligent in guarding them and herding them around. When I take a photograph with the macro function on my camera they come out wobbly, but I can make out a true fish form now instead of a lump with a...

    New cacatuoides and immediately fry!

Is there any way to check the level of infusoria in the tank without a microscope though? I have a really well established tank. The java moss is teeming with life, I have plenty of cyclops for instance, those I can see with my bare eyes. Also loads of other little moving pin pricks in the water.
