new to apistos (hongsloi & borelli)

Welcome Kurt, I know the feeling of jumping from the type of fish you raise to something different. I went from raising livebearers which are easy to apistos. Currently have a large quantity which I am raising to include raising other cichlids such as angels and discus. I have had the luck to...

Need help with newborn cockatoo fry

I buy Hikari Tropical First Bites and feed the fry a few times a day. Once they get a bit bigger I start feeding them cyclops or daphnia. I used to culture microworms but I have seen the same growth with the foods I see now. I am still working on increasing the survival rate. I usually loose...

Need help with newborn cockatoo fry

I would take the male out because he will usually get beat up by the two females if they have fry. I would also put a divider if you can to seperate both females so they can tend to their fry. Do not bother the fry because this might stress the female to eat her fry. I have had that problem...

    ID Please

I have bought fish that were labeled a. ortamanni that were actually a steichanderi. They were wild caught from Guyana area because I also found two nanaccara anomala that came in the same shipment. The pictures look exactly like the fish that I have. The males do get big compared to other...

How long do you leave your fry with there mum?

I have bred both honglosi and steichdaneri, I have kept the fry with only the mother for about a month. After that I put them into a seperate tank. Right now I have my a. steichdaneri with 20+ fry in a five gallong tank. Plenty enough room for the female to keep an eye on her fry.

    Wild A.steindachneri Colony

Have a bit of experience I have bred this species of apisto recently. It doesn't take too much to get them going. Only thing that I was not experienced with was how to get the fry to grow into mature adults. They were mating every three weeks and currently have one surving fry to about an inch...

    A. steindachneri spawn

My cf eunotus have spawned! I traded a pair of my cf2 viejitas for a trio of these fish over two months ago. Today I got home from work and peaked into all of my tanks to see how my fish were doing. To my surprise the dominant female was out swimming around with 30 plus fry. They are a little...

    A. steindachneri spawn

A little over a week ago I had my pair breed. Within a few days I saw that the female was fighting the male away and tending to her eggs. Now a little over a week her fry are free swimming. Right now I count around 20 fry. I have been feeding them Walter worms which they seem to like. How many...

    A. Trifasciata

Today I feed my apistos small pieces of live red worms. My a. trifasciata male did a unusual act I have never seen. He swam sides ways then turned over. He did this when the female got too close to his piece of red worm. Has anyone ever seen this form of acting. I know that he isn't sick because...

    Need Help to Identify!

Which ones are the a. steindachneri? The picture on top is the apisto that I cannot identify. I know that the top pic does not match the other two. Are the a. ortamanni really what they are?

    A. Eunotus

I received a trio of a. eunotus from con-dan-man about a month ago. They are doing great. He told me that they are proven breeders. Hopefully they produce fry for me too. Took this pic today thought it was a good pic to see the male and female together peeking out of their cave.

    Need Help to Identify!

A few weeks ago I bought some a. ortamanni and a. borelli "opal". Finding out that one of the fish was neither. Last weekend I went back and found another one just like it. I was told that the shipper might have accidentally put a few fish that were not on their order. Please help me out to...

    Live Food

Thanks Dan for the advice....the eunotus are doing good as well except that they hide alot even though I have some hornwort at the moment to give them some security. I am going to increase their tank size in a few days once I get my convicts and kribs to new homes. Want to stick with mostly...

    Cf?

Thank you for the quick response. I have been scratching my head due to this question.

    Cf?

I have been reading apisto books and I don't understand what cf. means when describing certain apisto species.

    Live Food

I recently purchased some live food cultures which includes grindal worms, vinegar eels, red worms, microworms, walter worms, wingless fruit flies, and also bought daphnia from a different individual. Are these good foods so my apistos can start breeding. Only feed my apistos frozen live food...

    what are they ?

By using my reference books I say that the variety of apistos that you have are apisto gossei. I can tell by the bar on its caudal fin and the coloration on the dorsal fin. If you can get your hands on the Aqualog book South American Cichlids II you will find the picture on page 37. Code # S03545-3.
