    Sweet Chestnut leaves

Cheers Mac, that's all very helpful. I'm not intending to add any shrimp or snails but I guess it's possible that snails will arrive with my floating plants. In my previous soft water setup I had no snails, I always assumed the softwater made them unlikely to survive.

    Sweet Chestnut leaves

Hi Mac, I was pretty sure they are safe, I was more curious as to whether or not they are worth adding, if they break down particularly quickly I would stick with Oak for now.

    Sweet Chestnut leaves

Thanks Darrel, that's a very useful answer. I haven't got such a great variety available locally, I can find plenty of Oak leaves and Alder cones for tannins and now I can use the Sweet Chestnut leaves for decor I should be all set.

    Sweet Chestnut leaves

My partner has just collected some of these stunning leaves from a woodland in Lincolnshire, England. I believe they are Sweet Chestnut leaves. My research suggest they are aquarium safe but does anyone know how long they are likely to last in an aquarium? Does anyone have experience using...

    Juwel Lido 120 stocking advice

One suggestion I will make, consider Otos if you're not dead set on the Bristlenose. You may well find the nocturnal activity of the Bristlenose stresses your dwarf cichlid, not to mention the Bristlenose's ability to uproot your plants. A sensible choice, and one many people don't seem to...

    Apistogramma Melgar (20 long update)

I once kept some Pseudomugil gertrudae with my A. macmasteri for a while. I had intended to move them into their own tank eventually. They are stunning little fish and the sparring males are spectacular. They spend most of their time near the surface so proved to be good dither fish for Apistos...

Dealing with hard tapwater with high nitrates

I wouldn't have expected to see Daphnia in the water butt! I always thought they occurred in pretty algae rich water in full sun, mosquito larvae seemed more likely. I guess Dapnia are good free food though! Do you have photos of your rain water collection setup? I seem to remember you sharing...

    How many caves in a 125 L (80 cm x 45 cm x 35 cm) Apisto Tank?

Cheers MacZ, I love the schematic, I might have to attempt to draw one myself once I've decided on my layout. I picked up four coconuts last night so will make some more caves at the weekend. I wont be using rocks in this tank just to save me needing to use egg crate or similar under the...

    Apostogramma cacatuoides ?

    A. cacatoides also gets my vote. I sold a lot of the red variants while working in aquatics, but I always thought the wild types are far more beautiful.

    How many caves in a 125 L (80 cm x 45 cm x 35 cm) Apisto Tank?

I'll have to do my best to get both tanks set up, then resist putting something else in the other tank... unfortunately I need to think about aesthetics as I don't think my partner would appreciate me filling the house with half empty quarantine, fry rearing and isolation tanks. She's very keen...

    Help with apistos

What other fish are in the tanks? Corydoras are likely to eat the eggs, I used to keep a rough Rio Meta themed tank and watched my Corys barge their way into the female macmasteri's cave on several occasions, no amount of pecking and charging on her part kept them out. I honestly feel Apistos do...

Dealing with hard tapwater with high nitrates

I've been thinking about my rainwater plans today and hoped to pick your brain a bit. I'm hoping to set up a few large water butts to harvest water for my tanks. If I have a large quantity like that stored going into the summer is it necessary to keep it aerated? I was hoping I could simply...

    How many caves in a 125 L (80 cm x 45 cm x 35 cm) Apisto Tank?

It's only the fact that I lack a 2nd tank to place the male into after spawning that worries me. I will likely set up a second tank to rear some fry in but a 3rd is very unlikely. If I did have the space I'd likely use it to breed Chocolate Gourami or even Vailants Chocolate Gorami although I'll...

    How many caves in a 125 L (80 cm x 45 cm x 35 cm) Apisto Tank?

Interesting. I knew some species are more suitable to keeping in harems vs pairs but I didn't know the distinctions were as clear as your description seems to suggest. I suppose this is something I'll need to look into when choosing my species. The reason I was swaying towards a pair is...

Dealing with hard tapwater with high nitrates

I like it, I might have to use that one. If I followed this philosophy I'd struggle to keep much more than Rift Valley Cichlids or some Rainbowfish. I've used RO water since getting into fish keeping but now that I don't work in aquatics I'm hoping to use rainwater in the future.

    How many caves in a 125 L (80 cm x 45 cm x 35 cm) Apisto Tank?

Sorry Ben, I was estimating slightly since I have measurements for both the dimensions measured outside the glass and the actual inside measurements giving the volume of space/water inside the tank. The actual internal dimensions are Length: 76.5 cm Width: 39.5 cm and Height: 45 cm. I think...

Dealing with hard tapwater with high nitrates

Germans, or at least a group within Germany seem to have a different approach to people in the UK when it comes to keeping pets of most types. My partner and I had a Hamster until recently and when looking into their care we found that many of the best websites and Youtube channels dedicated...

    How many caves in a 125 L (80 cm x 45 cm x 35 cm) Apisto Tank?

Hi Folks, I'm currently planning a tank for breeding Apistogrammas (the species is yet to be decided as availability varies constantly here in the UK) and hoped to get some input on my layout and provision of cover. The tank is roughly 125 L (80 cm x 35 cm x 45 cm) and my intention is to keep...

    Female being aggressive?

Hi Mike, I'm considering creating a partition for my new tank so I'll have one ready if ever I need it. The tank is currently empty so it seems like a good opportunity to do this. Do you have any recommendations for suitable methods or materials? If it's possible I'd like to create a...

Dealing with hard tapwater with high nitrates

I think that's a bit too much of a generalisation. The store I worked in was very keen on sharing accurate information with customers and giving them the best chance at taking good care of their fish, even if sometimes that meant steering a customer away from a purchase. Several of my colleagues...
