For substrate, mostly green lol. I try to get a carpet of subwassertang in most of my apisto tanks. I literally JUST trimmed some of the plants in here earlier today, but this is the 7 gallon cube that the male and one female are in currently.
If not green, then aquasoil color or black sand...
Howdy folks.
Just wanted to check back in and confirm this as another W in the apistogramma.com ID bucket-of-wins.
Accurate on both species and sexing. Ended up 1m2f trio of A. D37
The boy is looking amazing!
Thank you for the confirmation. That's what I had been assuming, but figured Id asked as I havent seen a female of the species, and after having them both for a few weeks had never seen the less dominant male go so vibrant. Very much appreciated at always
That's what ive been leaning towards as well. Just the last day or so he got way more yellow. The finnage and such definitely dont say female to me. Figured Id ask the experts, I know some regani-group species tend to be less dimorphic
So I was pretty confident I had 2 males of a Paulmuelleri. But just the last couple days one is really yellowing up and making me have doubts? Just figured id get a second opinion on them.
Bigger boy, with other specimen in question in background
focus swapped
Thank you very much for the insight. Glad to know its most likely exactly what I think it is, and that the one I was hoping was a male may just be! They only had 4 individuals left when I went, and 3 looked defintiely female.
This is true and I found that in my research as well. Mostly annoing...
I have had success with pygmaeus and habrosus cories in breeding tanks with a few apistogramma sp that i've kept without problems. Your mileage mage vary, everyone's fish and tanks/scapes etc are different. If the potential of cories being murdered by a protective apistogramma mom is...
Howdy everyone,
I have a fun one. My LFS gets some particularly interesting Apistogramma sp. but doesn't always have good labeling of them (Got some a paulmuelleri labeled as 'cara pintada' last week) These guys were labeled/came in as 'rio vaupes blue'
So, I don't really find anything useful...
Thank you for this insight! That is a pretty wide pH range, and a good deal hotter than I expected. ill bump their temp up a little bit to the higher 70's.
I was already decreasing pH but will probably shoot for 6 or so. As my experiences have been that breeding is more likely at lower pH for...
That is understandable for sure. That's why when I did buy apistos there, I did so from a seller that I had seen multiple reports of good healthy fish from, and was also suggested earlier here. JDaquatics. Id recommend him for sure based on my experience. He also typically has an impressively...
Hi Everyone,
I just recently received a lovely group of 5 wild caught apistogramma hoignei. I was wondering if anyone here has experience with keeping and breeding this species and if they have any insights as far as water parameters etc for that.
They seem to be settled in nicely, they are...
The best place imo is a band (a social media app thing) group dedicated to apistogramma buy/sell/trade.
There are a number of good sellers there, and also small time breeders that will have occasional stock as well. For example, I ordered some a. hoignei from jdaquatics (mentioned above, they...
Hi All,
It's a very gloomy time for me today. As I live in Austin, TX which just had a major ice storm and I lost power for over 48 hours, and subsequently 90% of my collection that I was not able to get evacuated to a powered place in time.
Unfortunately I dont know exactly how cold it got...
Especially the third, definitely looks like a younger version of the a. Ortegai 'Pebas' that I have
EDIT: added a second picture from a couple months ago when he was a bit younger
Thank you for weighing in as always! Confirms they are what they were labeled as. At least minus whatever the 'red' part of the label was referring to. Was listed as "Apisto sp 'pebas' red"
I dont really see any red in them yet. They are still pretty small though and likely have a good deal of coloring up to do still. They are probably barely over an inch.
Thank you for weighing in! Ill definitely get some pictures in a bit when they put get some more size on them, they are definitely still quite young. My LFS tends to specialize more than most with south american fish, but figured id look for a second opinion with such a specific species and...
