    Apistogramma Macmasteri Male Illness/Lockjaw?

Mr Daffodil died this morning, thank you for all your advice. As much as everyone around me irl seems to think that they are "just fish", this one really managed to swim his way into my heart. He lived a short life but he was so beautiful and charming the whole time. I will miss my king of the...

    Apistogramma Macmasteri Male Illness/Lockjaw?

I did wonder that as I typed it :( It is the most obvious difference. Thank you for your kind reply. I will definitely be quarantining from now on, regardless of the shop. This tank is my pride and joy now and Mr Apisto was the star, have learnt my lesson thoroughly. I have seen the apistos...

    Apistogramma Macmasteri Male Illness/Lockjaw?

I added some live food for my apisto this morning and he is not eating, I think I will put him out of his misery tonight, now I have some clove oil. I have been reading more and I wonder if my fish have gill flukes? A few months ago I noticed my female apisto flash on a piece of wood. It was...

    Apistogramma Macmasteri Male Illness/Lockjaw?

I moved him into a quarantine tank earlier today. I don't think he has lockjaw, I've noticed him close his mouth very briefly occasionally. It seems like his mouth is just open all the time to take deep breaths constantly, he definitely seems ill rather than injured. His body doesn't show any...

    Apistogramma Macmasteri Male Illness/Lockjaw?

Hello all, Very sad to be writing this post, as I researched all last night and suspect that my fish is doomed :( Apologies for the dark picture, the light doesn't come on for a fwe hours and he hasn't been in the front much so thought best not to disturb. Last night his mouth was wider, he's...

    Apistogramma Macmasteri Harem Stocking

Ah, there is a simple answer... I'm dyslexic, and read the below out of order as "several styles of these tanks" and wondered what that could mean. Thought maybe different regions of blackwater or something! I do like the "pond style", I've only been in the hobby for a bit over a year, and my...

    Apistogramma Macmasteri Harem Stocking

I've been petitioning the family to allow me a blackwater for a while! Would love to try it, hopefully they can be convinced soon... I even have a second hand 120L 100x40x30 tank and filter ready to go in the shed . My big tank in this thread has been quite a journey to get going (my first...

    Apistogramma Macmasteri Harem Stocking

This is fascinating, thank you for the explaination Mike! Here's my casually polygamous guy. Thought I'd show him off cos he really has become quite a stunner, 10 months old and finally all grown up!

    Apistogramma Macmasteri Harem Stocking

This is very interesting, thank you. So is it that harem apisto males purposefully want/collect multiple females in their territory, pairing ones just want one female, and the macmasteris don't mind either way and shoot their shot when the opportunity knocks? I only have a very basic knowledge...

"Rio Orinoco Biotope" (20 Gallon long) advice.

Ahh that's very interesting about the panic jumping, it seems like at the angle they swim they're prime for going straight into the air at any time. Thanks very much for the waterline height, I'm going to see how the tank would look like that.. think it could be a winner!

"Rio Orinoco Biotope" (20 Gallon long) advice.

May I ask how low is your waterline from the top? I have always wanted to keep the beautiful N. eques but as they are big jumpers and as all my tanks have emergent growth I can't fit a lid. Lowering the waterline could be a possibility though!

    Apistogramma Macmasteri Harem Stocking

Oh don't worry, I already realised from your first post that I won't be adding any more females, the questions I asked above were for when I design my next tank or rescape this one in a few years! I like what you said about corners, and I can see what you mean that my tank atm is a big single...

    Apistogramma Macmasteri Harem Stocking

Thank you!! I thought it might be pushing it, alas. Do you have any examples of tanks with enough of the right sort of territory/sight lines for more than one female? I like to design my tanks for the fish to thrive so it would be really useful to know! Particularly interested in understanding...

    Apistogramma Macmasteri Harem Stocking

Hi all, I have a heavily planted 180L 90x50x50 community tank. I currently have a pair of adult beautiful Macmasteri in there, along with some Cardinal tetras, pygmy corydoras and otos. The pair are lovely and have bred a few times in this tank but the fry don't survive, I don't mind though...

    Greetings from London!

Hello, my name is shangman (aka Rosie), from London. I thought I'd join here cos I keep Apistogramma Macmasteri Red Mask - I got my first tank in 25 years last June, then my dad gave me a single male Mac cos it was too big for his nano tank (Mr Apister), who I then bought a female bride for...
