    plant id?

I agree they are baby Echinodorus plants, I have had several like that recently in one of my tanks, at first I thought they were going to produce flowers, but maybe as they are submerged they produced these plantlets instead. They do eventually produce small roots but not for quite a while.

    blue-green algae issue

According to many sources Cyanobacteria seems to be associated with low nitrates or maybe a high phosphate to nitrate ratio. I have had outbreaks occasionally, always when nitrates have been close to zero. I once seemed to cure it by adding almond leaves, but on another occasion this didn’t...

Questions about my Regani Group Dwarf Pike

Sorry I only just saw this post, I did not get a notification... Well, I am not an expert on these, but I have read quite a bit about dwarf pikes since I acquired some a while back. Mine look very similar to yours and were identified as Crenicichla cf nothopthalmus sp. Orinoco on another forum...

    Stocking question

I had also read that extract from Tom C page. I can only confirm that the pencilfish will be fine.

Are most (all?) cave dwellers female of polygamous species ?

Well again, maybe different strategies depending on the environment?

Are most (all?) cave dwellers female of polygamous species ?

Well yes, there is a degree of variability that may depend on various factors. In Belize for example Cryptoheros spilurus usually spawned in quite deep holes in the bank (often old kingfisher nests) but sometimes just dug pits in the substrate. And I was thinking of convict cichlids, they...

Are most (all?) cave dwellers female of polygamous species ?

It is an interesting thought. However, there are many other cichlids that are monogamous but breed in caves - eg Amatitlania, Cryptoheros, the pike cichlids (that aren't all Crenicichla now), maybe Guianacara? (conflicting reports on these as to whether they are monogamous or polygynous). There...

Has anyone kept Orinoco dwarf pike cichlids?

Very nice footage of those dwarf pikes! I like those Below Water videos, and was surprised as I had not found that one before. They do look similar to mine, though my females only have 2 dorsal ocelli, not sure if this is variable. Having read this article https://peerj.com/articles/12283/...

    What to do now?

Sorry about your male, but will look forward to updates on the new ones!

Has anyone kept Orinoco dwarf pike cichlids?

Yes, that is correct, in that photo looking pretty plain, but when he displays or gets excited he gets the dark stripes and looks quite impressive. Note that the male does not have the extended dorsal fin rays typical of C. nothopthalmus, but that is the species it is apparently most closely...

Has anyone kept Orinoco dwarf pike cichlids?

I am in Ecuador! They came in a shipment from Colombia.

Has anyone kept Orinoco dwarf pike cichlids?

I did get some in the end, and ended up with 3, a male and two females. I actually got 5, but they were very tiny and skinny and two didn't make it, I think I waited too long to decide (about a month after I last posted), and they had probably not been fed well at the shop. They were so small...

    Agassizii vs Trifasciata vs Panduro

I agree, a male Apistogramma was one of the most aggressive cichlids I have owned. eventually needed a 240l tank to himself (well with some non cichlids and a couple of much bigger cichlids too).

Cichlid tank mates for golden zebra loaches

I’m sorry about the issues you have had, such a shame. My festivums were tank bred and cost $5 each. They were very tiny at first and initially did not eat well, but after a while 4 of them improved. Two failed to thrive, they just did not eat much, didn’t grow and eventually died. The shop...

    Marble hatchets

But perhaps nothing in the aquarium will scare them into such a big jump??

Cichlid tank mates for golden zebra loaches

Yes, agreed, that would be too much. You could try 3 angels and 3 festivums maybe? They are known to group together in the wild so together would make a decent group. Of course as with most cichlids you should always have a plan B in case any individuals have to be removed at some point. I would...

Cichlid tank mates for golden zebra loaches

I have 5 in a large tank (200 x 65 x 65cm) with other SA cichlids, they are no trouble. I had previously had them for about 9 months in a 240 litre tank (120cm, 4ft long), they were also fine. Mine have shown no indication of breeding behaviour, and grew at very different rates. Two are now...

Re-location to Peru, Dwarf cichlid queries

Here (Ecuador) most people make their own tanks or have them made, much cheaper than buying ready made ones.

    Apistogramma cacatuoides

I know mine came from Colombia, but where in Colombia I don't know. I liked them and they were not too aggressive.

    Apistogramma cacatuoides

This is what google translate comes up with: My fish is of the same species as yours. When I got it, the merchant was selling it as another variety, Apistogramma resticulosa! ! But I know no, the function is not obvious. It may have been found in another watershed in Brazil without the black...
