    Hole in the head?

My head almost exploded reading those (not in full admittedly). Thanks Darrel. I also found this study by Thi Thu Huyen Le et. al. (2019)<Kinetics and simulation of nitrification at various pH values of a polluted river in the tropics>useful to read and is more closely related to the...

    Hole in the head?

The gist of what you're both saying (as I understand it) is that pH doesn't play such an important role because their are several groups of bacteria that are responsible for nitrification and if there is ever an ammonia spike you both use floating plants to combat it. Firstly, I'd like to thank...

    Hole in the head?

Thanks for the response guys. Darrel, already using catappa leaves and see the effects on pH, hence the question. ButtNekkid, you don't measure pH? I don't overly concern myself with it either in my fishroom as I only keep software fish, however, I tend to raise the pH again once it goes...

    Hole in the head?

ButtNekkid, so you add all three at the same time? Doesn't it affect your pH wildly? Also, care to share the actual type of botanicals and where you purchase from so can can compare and find a supplier in Oz.

    Hole in the head?

Ade, thank for the info and I agree about the things that GBRs are susceptible to. He did have a little white dot on his forehead before this came about so maybe you're right. An injury that got infected. Darrel, not sure but if I had to guess, I'd say he was at least 18 months old. And I too...

    Hole in the head?

Hi Darrel. Unfortunately it was something far more severe than that. His jaw was also funny and he eventually succumb. Lost another male same weekend. He jumped through the tiniest of gaps. :-(

How to start breeding in hard water?

I bow to your wisdom Mike. Sounds like a more probable scenario.

How to start breeding in hard water?

Happens too often to be a coincidence. Most breeders and books on the subject recommend doing this. My guess is the pair see them as new competition and are coaxed to spawn before things get worse. That's just a guess and I would love to hear from more experienced breeders.

How to start breeding in hard water?

When I had trouble spawning my Macmasteris (same scenario as you, all signs were there but nothing happened) I got sick of it after a few weeks and decided to add pencil fish as dither fish. As soon as I did that, I got a spawn the following week.

    Cacatuoides Fry Instructions

Interesting conversation. I had a pair of Macmasteri doing nothing much for a few weeks, until I added the pencil fish. At that point they spawned and everyone is still in the same tank about a month later; mum, dad, fry and three pencil fish. I'm curious to know which species of pencil fish I...

    Second spawning - Remove parents?

Yeah, I'm thinking the same. Thanks Mike.

    Second spawning - Remove parents?

Hi guys. I have a pair of Macs in a 60 litre 2 foot tank with both parents and three pencil fish. The parents have spawned about three weeks ago and have been excellent parents so far. The mother looks after the fry and the father is chasing the pencil fish away. Now however, the fry have...

To water change or not to water change

pastry I was thinking of going to larger weekly water changes when they're large enough to take food on their own and don't look around for mama any more. I reckon that's close enough to 8 weeks or so. But larger doesn't mean 50% in this case as I believe these fish will do better with 30% WC...

To water change or not to water change

pasty, I also keep discus and do the large frequent water changes but I'm asking about very young apisto fry. Mike, did a 20% WC on Thursday, reluctantly, and seems I was gentle enough not to stress any member of the tank. Fry are coming along nicely.

    Female, or sleeper male?

UPDATE: Just to confirm, turns out she is indeed a female. A little hard to see but if you zoom in you can see the fry.

To water change or not to water change

Hi all. I have free swimming fry in my two foot tank with both parents and three pencil fish. Mama is keeping everybody at bay so I have no concerns there. My question is, the tank is due for a water change, but do I bother, or am I risking spooking mama and she eats her fry? Any advice welcome.
