The gist of what you're both saying (as I understand it) is that pH doesn't play such an important role because their are several groups of bacteria that are responsible for nitrification and if there is ever an ammonia spike you both use floating plants to combat it.

Unfortunately it was something far more severe than that. His jaw was also funny and he eventually succumb. Lost another male same weekend. He jumped through the tiniest of gaps. :-(
Happens too often to be a coincidence. Most breeders and books on the subject recommend doing this.
My guess is the pair see them as new competition and are coaxed to spawn before things get worse. That's just a guess and I would love to hear from more experienced breeders.
When I had trouble spawning my Macmasteris (same scenario as you, all signs were there but nothing happened) I got sick of it after a few weeks and decided to add pencil fish as dither fish. As soon as I did that, I got a spawn the following week.
Interesting conversation. I had a pair of Macmasteri doing nothing much for a few weeks, until I added the pencil fish. At that point they spawned and everyone is still in the same tank about a month later; mum, dad, fry and three pencil fish.

pastry I was thinking of going to larger weekly water changes when they're large enough to take food on their own and don't look around for mama any more. I reckon that's close enough to 8 weeks or so. But larger doesn't mean 50% in this case as I believe these fish will do better with 30% WC...

Mike, did a 20% WC on Thursday, reluctantly, and seems I was gentle enough not to stress any member of the tank. Fry are coming along nicely.
Hi all.
I have free swimming fry in my two foot tank with both parents and three pencil fish. Mama is keeping everybody at bay so I have no concerns there. My question is, the tank is due for a water change, but do I bother, or am I risking spooking mama and she eats her fry?
Any advice welcome.
