    bolivian Ram

You might have a pair. Fish 1 and 3 look to be the female, the male being the fish in #2, above the sandy bottom. Keep them well fed - blood worms seem to get them to spawn faster. Good Luck! Cathy

    bolivian Ram

Time will tell. Their sexual organs from this angle of the camera suggest male. If you have a female their ovipositor will be thick and point down. The male's organ will look like a sliver and point back to the tail. The male will have longer extensions on his caudal fin, however some female...

    Mikrogeophagus ramirezi - opinions

I'd sure go for it and breed them. To me, health is more important than beauty. (Yours are nice fish - I'm not saying they aren't!). I had a so-so colored male, but he had nicer than usual red in his fins. His sons were gorgeous, robust, well colored and very healthy. You'll end up with LOTS of...

    Mikrogeophagus ramirezi - opinions

You have a male and a female, he looks a bit skinny from this angle. Um, was there something else you were looking for? Cathy

    Getting the Right Water Parameters.

Check the gravel under where they are sitting... look closely. Is anything there? (Eggs or wigglers...) Lots of water changes is the best thing for torn fins... I used to do 2 50% water changes per week in an under stocked tank when I had blue rams.

By all means transfer a filter pad. There isn't much beneficial bacteria in the water column. I'd remove her sooner rather than later if he is showing dark and has 2 rips...

    Getting the Right Water Parameters.

If you have a cycled/mature tank to put her, that might be a good idea. A little time/out might trim her sails... Make sure you have excellent water quality in the tank with the male - his fins will heal better/faster.

    Getting the Right Water Parameters.

He'll get over this in time. You might let a little algae form on it if possible, but he'll get used to his reflection.

    Getting the Right Water Parameters.

Sounds like normal operating procedure... good luck and you'll probably have eggs soon!

    Getting the Right Water Parameters.

All kinds of people do it this way, all kinds acclimate. If you are sure your water is the same as the breeders, and the breeder is guarantying the fish, then go ahead and follow their advice. They will have to make good the fish if they don't make it. I acclimate. I open the bag and drop in...

    Getting the Right Water Parameters.

7.7 might be too high for the rams. You'd also better double check the pH in their existing tank before you try to acclimate them to that high a pH. PH swings are not good. Do you let your new/clean water age before you add it back to the tank during water changes? Try setting it up ahead of...

    A couple questions about Rams

Yes, they will breed - they are the same species. The water pillow exchanges the calcium/magnesium/carbonate ions for salt. Don't use it. Rams and salt are a no go. Rams also do better in water with a low TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). When you exchange one mineral for the salt you are not...

    Blue v. Bolivian Rams?

My Blues chase my Bolivians too... Give them time. Do you have dither fish in with them? They will come out of hiding with other fish swimming around. They don't have the personality of Bolivians though. Probably because they aren't shoaling fish like Bolivians are... They just don't have...

Loss of ram fry (but we are getting closer)

Great video, gorgeous fish. Makes me want to work with rams again! As to what happened, my guess is water quality went down. Did you test for anything - ammonia/nitrite/nitrate? Try keeping your sponge filter in your main tank until the day they hatch. Try bare bottom tank stuffed with...

    bolivian rams hidding.

This is normal. You could even get a couple more say even 3 more Bolivians, they really do much better in shoals and exhibit more interesting behavior in groups. In my couple of mixed tanks the Blues tend to dominate the Bolivians too. Cathy

    Help with Bolivians.

Get some blood worms and high protein foods and fatten up that new fish... Lip locking can be between males/males and males/females. This is one of the more entertaining behaviors. Just give them time, especially if the first one is coloring up. If you have a couple and if they like each...

    Help with Bolivians.

I checked out your first thread and though it did seem to be a female, the fish's sex organ pointed toward the back... this lead to think you might have a young male. However, I'm not certain... Now, as to your present situation. This is normal behavior. Let them work it out for a while and...

Disease in my apisto please help

Here is an excellent article on mela and pima fix. It explains why some people have such great success and others don't. The extract only works on SOME kinds of bacteria, not all. In some cases it can lead to huge bacterial blooms and kill off all the fish. I'm one of the ones who never...
