on the planted tank forums, we've been discussing NOT adding kh to our tanks. The idea is that it isn't absolute ph that impacts fish, it is kh. Indeed ph swings due to co2 really don't impact the fish if you keep your kh stable. I stopped buffering, have left my kh at 1 (natural for nyc water)...
My cacs have not only spawned, but I just
found 2 1/4 inch long babies who are not wrigglers
but little fish!!!!!
I saw the girl yellow a while ago, but I never
thought any eggs hatched. Now 2 survived with
none of my help, despite the existance of
rummies and a bristlenose pleco in the...
I have a healthy pair of apisto cacs (after a horrid die off where only one of three females and a male survived.. I waited a month and added a male to my bullet proof female and all is now well.)
I was thinking of adding either another female or a pair of blue rams. I have a heavilly planted...
Oh my, I may have just found a source for Coral Red Pencil fish!!! I am so excited. I have been looking for these for six months. Now, Mark at annubias Design, (the Yahoo group and fish /plant importer) has told me he thinks he can bring in about 100 of these at the end of the month!!
I am so...
I just lost a series of cacs too, same thing with no other fish affected (even teh stupid rummies which I wish would die)
One female of a bunch lives on and I'm waiting a month or so before attempting to restock
I tried to treat the male with a broadspectrum antibiotic when this started...
I don't smoke or use aerosoles.. I do dose ferts (tropica master grow) but I've never heard of anyone losing fish to them and the shrimp are fine.
Today no more deaths. ONly one female cac left.. the three splash tetras are all gone.
I am wondering if the tank was overstocked.... if this...
I seem to be having a die off. I lost a featherfin rainbow now and a splash tetra.
not sure why. They are fine one minute, and gone the next in perfect color adn shape.
anyone with ideas please help.
my orange flash male and the female he spent the most time with are missing in my 30 gallon heavilly planted cube. Tank is densely planted enough that I can lose fish without ever finding bodies :(
they both skipped the last 2 meals, but looked fine yesterday.
any chance they are hiding...
we have pillow soft water.. absolutely no need for RO when keeping cacatoides..
in fact, since my natural kh is 1.5 and gh is 1.5 I add a little baking soda to bring kh to 3 (I inject co2) and a touch of calcium/magnesium to bring gh to 2... for plant health.
ph with injected co2 stays at 6.1...
I've never been there but it sounds like fun
no bad experiences with new world fish (aside from ich once)....I just think the people here are amazing and just so knowledgeable.. also I have gotten the most incredible female cacas from TJudy here.

the females that died I got back in december from az gardens and they had been totally gorgeous...until two weeks ago.. I lost their male to a hypoxic episode when I didn't yet realize I needed a bubble stone going at night to counteract all of the plant respiration
the male I got a couple of...
I'm on ted's dose of Bifuron now.... but I began treating before I had these latest symptoms... more reacting to a sick fish after 2 deaths.
I have emailed him the symptoms as well.. hoping for his take .
oh and the new baby females I"m trying to protect are from ted!! amazing and beautiful...
bloated in the belly
water quality is always pristine. I do 50% changes weekly
I noticed one stringy stool, but it wasn't pale, before all this started. I did lose two females 2 weeks ago.
bloated, hiding then dead.
and refusing to eat.
since the females died 2 weeks ago a little pale and a little bloated, but with no outward signs of any parasites, I am maknig a guess and treating the tank with bifuren antibiotic.
Should I also treat for parasites at the same time. After one day of treatment, male...
