    Purple Pencilfish (Nannostomus rubrocaudatus)

I have a 20 Long (30" x 12" x 12") that will be housing a pair of Apistogramma. For those with experience with N. rubrocaudatus, how many shall I plan on adding? They will be the only other fish with the Apistogramma.

Looking for Confirmation on Softener/RO Unit Set-Up

Been a while since my college chemistry classes, and I've never had to mess with water chemistry before moving. A little advice is appreciated! Just purchased a home in Florida, USA. Water is basically liquid rock, with high limestone, Ca, Fe, etc. feeding into the city water. I plan on getting...

    Apistogramma sp. Putumayo

There appears to be two species in this batch, and I'm concerned with the one that doesn't look like A. barlowi. Wild caught from Peru, they have a few small bands below the lateral line, and there are what looks like two small caudal fin spots that have joined at the base. Any ideas?

    Apistogramma sp. Apayaco

Is this a form of A. barlowi? A. sp. Maulbruter? (Are they the same now?) Stressed coloration is very dark with green iridescence on the top of all scales, rust colored dorsal. Normal coloration is seen in the big male in the video. Tail has a small blue streak at the bottom, and the bottom...

Apistogramma sp. "Green Spot" - Puerto Maldonado

Hello! Any help ID-ing this fish would be appreciated. Sold as A. sp. "Green Spot" and from Puerto Maldonado. Video is not the best but they appear to be mostly blue-bodied. Fairly obvious caudal spot that spans almost the width of the body at the tail. First few dorsal rays are black in all...

    Palm Fronds from Gardens

I'm sure this has been visited before, but I can't find what I remember reading... First question: I've had one big palm frond in my new tank for about two months and it seems to have stopped leaching tannins finally, and I recently added another one. A few days later the water was very murky...

    Apistogramma sp. Harlekin?

We received these as Apistogramma sp. Harlekin, though a few articles I've seen have listed this as a pseudonym for A. rositae? Based on the video of below (sorry about angle), can anything be said definitively?

ID Needed - A. uaupesi or A. lineata?

This fish is reportedly from the Rio Atabapo. I have a female who hides all the time, but she has the same tail shape and pelvic markings. The video might seem long with some boring parts, but hopefully there are enough fin flares and behavioral twitches to help ID this guy. He's still in a QT...

    Contaminant Apisto

This guy came in with a batch of tetras from Colombia. He's grown up a bit in the last few months and while he doesn't show any color, he's got markings on his face and caudal fin and distinct fin features that should hopefully help identify it. Any help is appreciated. He has deep black bands...

    Light Colored Sand/Substrate

Hello all, Curious about what your go-to sand options are. I have used the average tan/beige sand at 2-6mm my whole life, but I'm looking to go with a lighter color and smaller pebble size in my next tank. See the following video for an example: I haven't looked into play sand yet, but I...

    Hatchets or Pencils?

I've got a 55 gallon Peruvian tank with Petitella georgiae, Hemigrammus rodwayi, Corydoras trilineatus, Otocinclus macrospilus, and Apistogramma eremnopyge. My shop finally got in Nannostomus eques from Peru, which I've been waiting on for a while, but they also received Carnegiella myersi, the...

Identification - A. cacatuoides? No banding

We have a batch of wild A. cacatuoides from Peru, but 30-50% of the fish look like the images attached and do not have any dark banding on the stomach, and the colors appear slightly off for A. cacatuoides. Is this normal variation? The pale appearance does not appear to be related to stress...

    A. juruensis? (Sold as, at least)

Can anyone offer their knowledge on what this looks like? If more pics are needed, let me know which angles and I'll try to capture some. These were sold as A. juruensis, and I'm having a difficult time determining the true identity. Someone said they were A. allpahuayo, but they don't appear to...

Feeding fry in a community tank?

Hello all. This is my first post here, but I've been browsing in and out for a while now. I bought a pair of A. macmasteri about two weeks ago, and it looks like I chose well...they have about 20-40 fry squirming around in a pot in the corner of my 55 gallon. My question is: What's the best...
