Imo, it s dangerous for the male. My female mouthbreed till free-swimming and after that when she feels unsafe. She also tends to take fry in mouth just before lights off.

Breeding diary of A. sp. Maulbruter

The male, in my case is hidden somewhere in the tank. He gets severely beaten as soon as coming out, there's no way he can come close to the fry. Even now that they are 1.5cm. Wished i could have removed him for his safety, he s just lucky the tank is very heavily planted (reason why i...

    A sp Maulbruter

We had the same thought with Candidi (another member of the forum). I'll need more spawns to find out. It's been 5 days between eggs hatched and free swimming. At first she carried the fry all the time. But after that, the fry was left in a hole she dug most of the time. Unfortunatly, i...

    A sp Maulbruter

Hello KenL, I dont realy have any tip for breeding them. It was really a big surprise for me for many reasons. First Peter told me he didn t have much success in breeding them, even though he has been breeding lots of apistos, and he had several males and females. Considering i just had a...

    Cichlid Atlas Key

If you have the book, or can read it somewhere, the legend can be found in Mergus Aquarium Atlas 1. It's page 200 in mine, but it s french version so might not be the same in yours. (it's the page just before species description). Also Chris is right.
