Great news Ted! Congrats on your success & progress with both species (thank you too for the P. gabonicus videos posted on your blog, I posted the link on cichlidsforum.fr . Keep us posted! :)
Hi Ted,
The parameters of the Foto river in the description of the species show a pH below 6 if my memories are correct.
I indeed had some sex ratio balance & hatching rates problems - many females in proportion and little fry - with too extreme parameters (pH 4 and t°c around 28°c)...
Hi!
For once, I beg to differ with Ted : the water softness and pH do matter in egg hatching => if the water is too hard and / or the pH too high, the eggs just won't hatch (I have a tank with medium hard & pH 7 tapwater for the pairs I don't have space for, and these pairs spawn frequently...
Nice job! And nice pics too!
Thanks for the behavioural observations too BTW ;) . I'm not sure you can compare the "food spitting" behaviour of 2 pairs of distinct geographical forms and deduce it is a difference between the 2 forms though, given among different pairs of Pelvicachromis spp...
Feel like I experienced this before Ted (last example, T. joka larvae for the first time 3 days before I moved 400km away  )
I hope you will have good holidays anyway, and will keep my fingers crossed for your pair, so that they do not fight to death in your absence, or even that a...
Hi!
What kind of "tumbler" do you use please? I have a pair of joka, which spawned numerous times, resulting in hatching only twice : 1st 1 week before I moved (the larvae didn't make it during the travel), and the second time the larvae just spread apparently uncontrolled in the whole tank...
Glad to read that this species has its fans in Australia too! :) Some new pics of the other pair that formed itself among the 4 individuals I initially got (you'll say I'm lucky, but unfortunately this second female disapeared quite suddenly - no corpse, no witnesses, the perfect mystery :( )
If this is serious and if the presentation schedule is not fixed yet, I can talk about it (cannot promise anything of course though):D . Whet would be the theme of your presentation?
Thanks wetthumbs! My first attempt with this species (a few years ago) was a failure too : the male killed the female. That's why this time I took care not to isolate a duo to early, prefering to wait for a pair to bind among 2 duos.
Now I have to get them to spawn and to keep my fingers...
Hi!
A duo of trnasvestitus seems to be pairing increasingly strong pair bonds!
@ Mud pie mamma / vulcisfus : your article is really interesting, thanks again! Would you mind if I shared it with the Chromidotilapines fans I know?
Thanks Ted! This is really nice of you :) . I don't have any room free for now (focusing on trying to breed T. joka, S. pindu and N. transvestitus) but I hope it will change in 2010!
Regarding the opportunity to bring some back to Europe, maybe one possibility would be one of the next times...
Hi all,
Thanks Ted for this really nice video, it's the first one I ever saw of this species!
H. sp Moanda is one of the rare Hemichromis spp. I intend to try to keep and breed one of these days (among reasons for that, the fact that they may be the real lifalili is not the least, but...
Hi,
This subject was recently discussed on CRC, here is the link :

Maybe you'll find this interesting ;)
Thanks Mud Pie Mamma! Glad you like them! And also looking forward to seeing them spawn! They haven't paired yet, but it shoul happen on of these days! :)
One more pic of this little zebra :
Hopefully they will make it soon Ted! Please keep us informed!
I've only kept and bred C. guntheri among Chromidotilapia, but from I could observe and guess, pair bonds strenght and experience are especially important with pair bonding bi parental mouthbrooders.
I would be very interesting...
