why are apistos seemingly so hard to find?

I don't understand it either. Apistos are great fish. They have so much personality and instinctual behavior. With their small size, I don't understand why they aren't more popular.

    Hongsloi II had babies, unexpectedly

A couple of things... Removing fry is easier with a siphon or turkey baster than a net. Very easy in fact. Hatching brine shrimp is actually quite easy as well. Here is my setup for a quick harvest in about 12-15 hours. All I did was take a small jelly jar (4.5 inches tall, 2.25 inches in...

    A. Cacatuoides - pre-spawn display

I actually replaced my sand with Flourite. For whatever reason, I always had algae/Cyanobacteria problems with sand. I'm sure ill get the itch to switch back at some point.

    A. Cacatuoides - pre-spawn display

Here is a pic I snapped of my breeding pair this morning. This will be their 3rd spawn. The first and second spawns are being grown out in separate tanks. Just sharing. :-)

    New Apistogramma Cacatuoides Tank

Nah. Should be fine. Your caca's will stay near the bottom and the cards will fly high. Some folks will say that cards require a bigger tank, but I'll leave that up to you.

    A. agassizii flaring for his lady

Snapped this pic today after my female emerged from her cave after hiding for several days since her introduction to this tank. My male has reason to live now. LOL. Reminds me of me when I was 17.

    A. Cacatuoides Fry - Albino? White Gold?

Just an update on these guys. Both fish are doing great. Is it too early to sex these fish? I believe the "normal" colored one is a male, but what about the white gold one? I initially thought it was a female, but now am not too sure.

What type of A. Agassizzi is this?

I think I found my answer. According to an article on fish channel.com, sneaker males can morph into vibrantly colored males if the dominant male is removed.

What type of A. Agassizzi is this?

Thanks guys. If I moved the subordinate male to a different tank with other apistos but no other Agassizii, would he color up? Or is he forever a wuss?

What type of A. Agassizzi is this?

Thanks Mike. I have them in a 10 gallon along with 4 Juli Cories and 3 Amano shrimp. Pretty tight quarters for another female don't you think? Here is a picture of the tank for reference.

What type of A. Agassizzi is this?

Hello friends. I picked up a pair of A. Agassizzi at Petsmart of all places yesterday. They were labeled as "double red" but I am not so sure. Can anyone help me with a better ID? Here are a couple of pics of the male. And here are a few of the female: Also, I am seeing some aggression...

    A. Cacatuoides Fry - Albino? White Gold?

Very very cool. Thanks so much for the info. These are my first caca fry. I wish had more than 2 of them so that so many brine shrimp aren't wasted. Lol Right around the time that the picture in my original post was taken, I put a batch of about a dozen wriggles in there with them and they all...

    A. Cacatuoides Fry - Albino? White Gold?

Hi Everyone, I finally got my fry tank set up and was able to save a couple of fry from the last brood. Literally only a couple - 2 of them. LOL They are 4-5 weeks old now and one of them looks like what you would expect but the other looks like an albino! Can anyone tell me more about what...
