wow rr, I didn't think this tank could get any better but you have somehow accomplished it. the rain effect is amazing and the tree frog is a stunning addition!
This seems to be the case for a lot of people with I. adoketa. Can you share how large your tank is and what kind of decorations? Despite these reports, there are still a lot of sites that claim adoketa are "peaceful" cichlids. I'm really curious as to why there are such strong contradictions...
Has anyone ever tried this? It seems like a much more effective means of administering medication to fish compared to soaking solid foods, where much of the dissolved medication may be wasted and not "bind" well to the food.
RR - the angelfish moved their fry (wrigglers, I assume?) onto emersed Hydrocotyle leaves?
I am planning to put a large section of H. leucocephala in the back left area of my tank to partially cover up the tubes from the water pump. I'm thinking to use some kind of foam as a <trellis raft> to...
I took this photo of a new Maranta leaf yesterday:
It was partially shaded beneath some taller leaves and thus not easily visible upon cursory inspection. There were other leaves like it earlier which I trimmed off. Granted, the Maranta seems to have regained some of its coloring since I...
your tank has the look that I one day hope to achieve with mine so there is no comparison. Although the fish are my priority, I have a great interest in planted tanks. I would be really interested to know what kind of lighting and fertilization, if any, that you use. I'm still experimenting a...
this tank puts my riparium to shame. beautiful and inspiring growth. the copella spawning is a really cool added bonus. I see you even have some Sarracenia. I also have a few species but I'm wary of putting them in a riparium. Looks like yours is doing great in there!
By the way, is that...
Thank you for the extremely helpful explanation Darrel. There were some new leaves not shown in the photos above that were very pale, pretty much identical to the photo I linked in my last post.
Without a PAR meter it is hard to make a definitive conclusion, but simple math dictates that the...
Yes, I tried but failed to make the distinction in my second post that, although there should be no "aquatic" plants in a blackwater biotope, "submerged" plants could be valid if the biotope was meant to represent a flooded area. You also mentioned that this was your intent in your second post...
Darrel - just out of curiosity do you have any special knowledge or expertise with regards to Maranta leuconeura (erythroneura)? I've noticed that some of the new leaves have very pale coloration, identical to what is happening in the photo below:
I've concluded that this is most likely due...
Hi Mike
Just to satisfy my own curiosity and learn more about biotopes, could you tell us why this is not really accurate? I know that blackwater biotopes generally do not contain any submerged vegetation but wouldn't it be acceptable for tanks that are meant to represent flooded areas during...
Gorgeous tank. I agree that apistos should be very happy in that. Based on comments from many experts I've found that, if it has any aquatic plants at all (aside from floaters), it's probably not a "true" biotope. That said, aquatic plants do provide many benefits to a tank even if they are not...
Thank you Darrel. I can tell by their colors and appetite that the fish are healthy, but unfortunately I was mistaken about them being ready to breed. 10 days post-purchase seemed too good to be true, and it was :p It's likely that they need a good deal more time to become a "couple" and I will...
rr16 - the gap from the water level to the top of the tank is about 20 cm (about 8 inches). I know that they are capable of jumping higher than that but have heard that rarely jump higher than just a few inches in home aquaria. I am praying that this is true. Your biotope thread is one of my...
Here are some new pics of the tank and my new pair of Ivanacara adoketa. So far they seem be healthy and are eating well, especially when I feed them frozen bloodworms. They are almost as voracious as my SA puffer. I have my fingers crossed that they have bonded. It's been about 10 days and I...
Even without flowers the tank looked fantastic, especially in the full tank shot 040.jpg. The plant health and mass is what struck me the most. Do you have any updated shots with the new fish?
Thank you all for the kind comments. I added a pair of Ivanacara adoketa last week and they seem to be doing really well. I think I got lucky and received a bonded pair as they generally stick close to one another and I've observed no aggression thus far. I will upload new photos with the...
thank you both for your feedback. I tried filtering with long strand moss yesterday but it barely affected my water parameters. TDS was about 100 and pH was about the same. Maybe 0.2 points lower. My guess is I had my water flowing through the moss too quickly.
