    Advice needed for "new" Tank...

if you've never kept dwarf cichlids, start with the basics......try Pelvicachromis pulcher. they're nice looking, cheap, hardy, and easy to find (at least in the US--not sure where you're from).

    Apistogramma Atahulpa

sorry, off topic, but had to ask.........is the ICZN also the official body that assigns scientific names? or do they just promote a standard?

    Cacatuoides Fry Food

its been a while since i had cacs, but i raised mine almost exclusively on java moss (or more correctly, the good stuff that gets trapped within, as Darrel stated) and decapsulated brine shrimp eggs. can't say i ever had a problem with the lack of movement (since decaps don't hatch).

    New forum software

I like it.....not as much unused space....easier to read. Josh, when you create a custom light theme, please leave this as an option (just in case). thanks.

    What's New?

Josh, when i click on "what's new", i see an unread message under "husbandry/breeding".....but when i click on "forums" to view everything, there is no "husbandry/breeding" section, thus no indication of any unread messages. did we lose a section in the switch?

    Conductivity rise

my post on Friday got me thinking.......the value should level off eventually. if you assume concentration is linearly proportional to conductivity (general true at aquarium levels), this asymptotic value is W(1-P)/P, where W is your weekly increase in EC and P is your percent water change with...

    Conductivity rise

how often have you/do you measure EC? what's the EC of your tap? it's not unheard of for EC to jump 500uS a week under the right circumstances. even if you originally filled your tank with pure RO water and perform a weekly 20% water change with pure RO, if your specific environment...

Wondering what apisto hybrids people have come accross

our classifications of the animal kingdom are merely our best attempt at organizing the random nature of nature itself. i find it difficult to believe that some of the fish we classify as distinct species aren't already hybrids of other species.....perhaps by mere evolution, perhaps man-made...

    No more adverts..

have you looked into phpBB or SMF......both of these software packages are free, which might help reduce costs and thus avoid excessive ads.

Wondering what apisto hybrids people have come accross

by-and-large, I probably agree with the UK camp........but evolution is a natural phenomenon. with or without our interference, it will occur. hybridization is just one such mechanism. right or wrong, in the end, the consumer will drive what's produced, not the academic/scientific community.

    mark as unread

i actually use chrome....and see the mark forums as read option. mark as unread, however, would be useful if you want to refer back to something at a later time. just not sure if the vbulletin software has that functionality.

josh, nevermind on the account.....got it working. original change of email confirmation got sent to spam. is there a way to implement "mark as unread" functionality?

    decap. brine shrimp egg question

I recently bought some DBS eggs? What is the best way to store them once you open the vacuum-sealed package? In the refrig? In the freezer? Room temp?

    Growing out Brine Shrimp Question

This is from my "fish files" (the original author might have been 'TJudy'): BS are hatched (in normal fashion) in inverted 2 liter bottles and harvested after 48 hours. They separated from empty cysts and moved to growout aquarium. I know that many advocate conical bottoms for growout...

    New Hardness (CaCO3) test kits

This is a cut & paste from a document I saved a while back: By definition, 1 dGH = 10 ppm CaO. Or, 1 German degrees general hardness is obtained by dissolving 10 milligrams of calcium oxide into 1 liter of water. Or, 1 dGH equals 7.1 ppm Ca++ (calcium ion). Or, 1 dGH equals 17.9 ppm CaCO3...
