To be honest, your tank is pretty large for dwarf cichlids, so you have more room for manoeuvre. All male would look nicer IMO and without the presence of females, they will display to each other but I doubt it would lead to any serious violence. Rams though, will behave more naturally in a...
I don't think you can go to a store and pick out the gender you want 100% of the time. Apistos are often sold as pairs. Also cacatuoides red and yellow are the same species so that may cause more aggression. IMO you should reconsider the stock list.
Having pairs doesn't necessarily guarantee...
They are lovely fish. I'm surprized that no one has mentioned it yet but they have now been formally described. Pelvicachromis silviae is the new name. Described by Anton Lamboj and named after his wife.
Buy a young pair of apistos you like the look of and combine with tetras/pencilfish or other dithers and maybe some nice corydoras or similar... Lot of wood, leaves and maybe a coconut cave and you have apisto heaven :-)
I've recently returned to apistogramma.com after not using it for some time. In that time I've started to use my real name on other forums as I am involved in two cichlid clubs and I find it is now pointless and a hindrance to have an anonymous username due to the advent of Facebook.

It's like deja vu all over again Darrel!
I know that these fish come from extremely soft water, but is it really necessary in captivity? I bred F1 A. irinidae in about 60ppm but most Apistos (IME) spawn in about 150ppm. Is it necessary to reduce the hardness to <20ppm?
You will find a lot of good advice here, but why not join the BCA? We have a strong welsh contingent and meet up twice a year in Redditch (surely not too far from Newport). Search for us on Facebook or join the forum (linked in my sig)
I had 5 tinanti in a 48x18x15 with congo tetras and syno cats. Two paired up and spawned without too much aggro.
They mix well with Pelvicachromis, riverine Lamprologus and even Hemichromis IME.
