My Dicrossus filamentosus fry are now about 15mm long and nearly as big as their parents were when I bought them.
Mum and dad are now flirting and may be planning to spawn again. So I guess it's time to move the fry on to another tank. What's the best way to catch them? There are only 8 of...
I can highly recommend D filamentosus :)
Their challenges are showy but not aggressive, so you can keep a group of 6 or so even in a 2' tank. They have great colours too. The first cichlid I have bred :D
This is probably the wrong place to ask, but is there a specialist forum for characins? I'm a member of a couple of cichlid and catfish fora, but I keep some interesting characins too and would like to discuss them. Any links?
Not my pic I'm afraid, just one that appeared in Amazonas and online. I do have some good ones of mine - here's the first one I found.
Pier Aquatics in Wigan (UK) is the place to go!
I have a small group of P.aurantiacus 'lefini' - are these the same fish we're talking about? Turquoise, yellow and dark grey stripes. I'm hoping to get some more tomorrow if Pier still have them in stock.
This is interesting - thanks :) my BBS hatchery is on a windowsill and has developed green water of its own accord! At the moment I am only harvesting BBS but I might try leaving some a bit longer.
My Dicrossus fry that I started the BBS for are now big enough to be eating small bloodworms! :)
Being fairly new to this game, I'm interested in the difference in behaviour between my two sets of cichlid parents. The Moanda parents share the duties of looking after the babies (pictured with Dad above) but with the Dicrossus it's definitely Mum who looks after the brood and she chases Dad...
The 12 tetras in the tank have spent all weekend in the top corner of the tank trying to keep out of the way of Boko and Haram who are now in charge of 90% of the tank. Interestingly the giant Otos are less scared of them.
I've seen Haram (mum) pick up babies in her mouth and bring them back to...
I don't drive either. Pier is 5 minutes walk from either Wigan station while Aqualife is a 20-minute walk from Croston station. They gave me a lift back to the station last time I went :)
My tanks are rather full at the moment to be thinking about more fish - everyone seems to be breeding at the...
That's Urmston Aquatics, which is my LFS and only a short walk away. They're above average for an LFS but not in the same league as Pier, Aqualife, or Abyss. Most of my fish come from Pier these days, but I go to Abyss about once a month. I'm currently thinking about a marine tank and will...
It's a small world :)
This is my thread on the Dicrossus with some photos showing them growing up, and of the new babies:

Thanks - I guess the white areas enlarge to produce the chequerboard pattern as they grow.
A few pics from the other night and this morning in the early sun :)
I've got a Lido 120L too - it's a nice tank and your scape looks great and very natural.
The downside is that for its volume, the floor area is small. I would say there isn't room for more than one Apisto territory. So only one male in my opinion.
Having said that, I keep Dicrossus...
