No, you can't do that... be careful.
If you call them e.g. Apistogramma papagei, that would mean, it it a species which ist scientifically described by that name. Of course it is not. So, this is - and was in the past - WRONG!
So, if you keep calling them Apistogramma sp. "Papagei" like it was...
Hi,
there's a new species description.
If I see it right, the new species includes what we know as A. sp. "Pebas" and A. sp. "Papagei/Papagallo".
Apistogramma ortegai (Teleostei: Cichlidae), a new species of cichlid fish from the Ampyiacu River in the Peruvian Amazon basin

Hi Mike,
That seems to be another local-/colourform with red cheeks and blue fins. Very beautiful.
My males are already 6-7cm, so they are adult and I don't think they will change colour when they become older.
And due to the fact, that all males from the current import look the same, I think...
The pH is about 5.5, the conductivity about 150µS. Temperature ist 26-27°C.
But in my eyes the more important thing is, that I cleaned the tank before, so there are less bacteria in it.
best regards,
Rolo
Hi,
little update, 2 weeks later... I have been away for 4 days and when I came back yesterday, I had a nice surprise:
I found both females guarding fry. :)
So, Tom, ...have a closer look at it and compare it with yours! ;-)
That was a bit surprising. I suspected one female to have eggs...
Hi,
I don't think, they are A. sp. Oregon, Mike.
The caudal spot is much too small at the male, and at the female, the lateral spot is too big.
So, my guess would be A. nijsseni.
Here two pictures of A. sp. Oregon:

This is mine, I had several years ago. It's obviously the same as DBLauj's fish, but I can see differences to Jeff's fishes. ...could depend on pictures, mood, polychromatism or whatever ... or they are really from different locations.

Rolo
Same import / catch expedition or really same location?
Same import / expedition wouldn't exclude, that DBlauj's fish is a by-catch in a batch of Macs or the whole import is a mixture of both.

Rolo
Hi,
the fish from BBlauj I would certainly call A. viejita. (Form 1 aka Rotsaum/Red-Seam)
I'm not that sure with the pictures of Jeff's fishes. Could be the same, could also be A. macmasteri.)
regards,
Rolo
Hi Mike,
as you explained, A. megaptera shows highly extended front dorsal fin spines and lower only moderately serrated spines behind them. According to Staeck (article in the new special issue of the german dwarf cichlid association (AKZ) magazine) there's no doubt that A. sp. Breitbinden /...
Hi,
the Tefé Agassizii shows abdominal stipes, your fishes don't show these stripes.
Therefore the name as you bought them is correct.
It's a "double red" aquarium strain of A. agassizii.

Rolo
Hello Mark, Steve and all the others from England.
I have a possibility to organize a transport for fishes from UK (Norfolk) to germany on easter-monday.
Does anyone of you still have A. sp. Schwarzkehl/Black-Throat? I'm especially interested in this species, but you can offer other...
Okay, now I'm a bit confused and have to rethink my own definition of A. viejita, but I believe you're right.
Thank you for the explanation.
...but I never was and I am still not positive, that they are really two species. But I 100% agree, that there are extensive collections needed to build a...
No, they didn't! But unfortunately mine didn't became very old. The Panta Rhei fishes seem to be quite old in my eyes.
I have never seen an old, big, adult Rotsaum male. Therefore I can't exclude, that it will develop tips and a robust body, but I could imagine that, if they grew up in good...
