how about an apistogramma.com collecting trip? :)
I'm thinking about it for a few years already and even mentioned it hear some time ago. finding cheap flights to Belem or Iquitos is not that difficult. only we would need some support there to get to collecting sites and (most important) get...
This baby apisto came with a shipment of Otocinclus sp., probably from Peru.
it seems to be a female. is it too early to ID it or can someone give it a try?
I will upload a better picture as soon as I manage to make her stay in one place for a moment ;)
Greg
c'mon, show us some more :)
I see the plants growing behind the tank. are they separated from the tank or do they overhang?
what are the water parameters and temperature?
is the height (30") measured for water level?
the lighting must be powerfull to allow the bottom plants to grow.
and...
I found this link in my bookmarks, quite an old one, but very interesting.

I wonder if you know of any other collecting reports from other regions?
it's a great thing for a "biotope geeks" like myself - for planning a "natural setup".
can anyone...
I think it's the (in)famous A. sp. "Steel Blue", as controversial species as they go :)
you will find a lot of information about it searching this forum.
it only drives me crazy to wait for them, I could buy 10 parts all together if they are available ;)
still, to tell the truth, there are some chapters in CA1 that I haven't yet explored well enough. you never have enough of it, something new (or forgoten) pops out everytime you reach for it.
yeah... (yawn)... would you pick me up from the airport tomorrow...? ;)
hey, btw, I wonder if you recognize any of those plants? I had to use my imagination and what's available to get at least a hint of the feeling you have there :)
Chaos engine, you're doing it on purpose! ;) you can't imagine what impact your stories have on a guy sitting on the other half of Earth and other side of the Ocean...
instead of telling us about your plans to camp there next dry season you'd better send an official invitation to all forum...
A few years ago there were bad rumors about Czech breeders. They were said to X-ray the fish, causing infertility... for whatever that's worth.
I could never confirm it. Although the fish were often very delicate, susceptible to deseases and sometimes hard to introduce to my tanks - they were...
I would go for one species, in bigger quantities - A. trifasciata, sp. Mamore, if you're looking for diversity choose M. ramirezi or A. borelli, which occure in different colour variants. all mentioned are relatively small and not so aggressive species, can be kept with 50:50 sex ratio or with...
I keep 3 pairs and loads of odd other dwarfs in a 120x60x40 tank. she's a very good mother, chasing away even adult agassizii male.
he (N. male) is patrolling the whole tank looking more for some other female than enemies.
but they both look great during brood care.
there were some discussions about the books on the forum, you can easily search them and make up your decision.
I am very happy with Roemer's Cichlid Atlas. it has lots of information which will remain valid for a long time.
for websites - www.mongabay.com is perhaps the best on biotopes...
I don't remember anyone mentioning it here - bloodworms' natural environment, where they are collected from, is very often highly contaminated. while there are methods to get rid of the contaminants from their bodies, I don't know many producers who would waste time and resources for it.
one...
"sp Mamore" is widely available in Czech Rep. Not sure which breeding stock(s) they use, but I saw a growout tank with a few hundreds of them and the males' tails were anywhere between total red to total transparent (will become blue in adults). top and bottom half reds were also present.
I...
you would get better answer if you specify which species you would like to combine. some are more aggressive, some respond differently towards specific morphological traits, like color or fin shape.
females can also cause problems.
it's a domestic form of a. macmasteri. you may find more information on the subject in this thread http://forum.apistogramma.com/showthread.php?t=4592 and a few others in this forum.
Greg
I had 4 juveniles and suspected 2 of them to be a pair. "he" had some color on the fins and "she" had a blotch on the belly similar to those at the nijjseni group females. unfortunately they both decided to leave the tank while I was not watching. now I have 2 smaller specimens and no idea what...
yes, there most likely will be problems. the female will happily claim a territory of 15cm radius (1/2 ft), the male can claim 1 sq meter if possible. the presence of other, bigger cichlids will not serve them well.

He is a known dwarf cichlid...
