I am right here Gerald, didn't you see me? :-)
the H+ and OH- concentrations don't need to cancel each other out, if that was the case you could only ever have water with a pH of 7. you can have either more H+ or more OH- but together they will always add up to the same number. formula for that...
No need. Many apistos live in fairly mineral poor waters (low conductivity/TDS) and even if cacatuoides can be kept at higher pH/conductivity they will still be fine at the lower values
Looks a bit like A. macmasteri to me? Not sure though. Bottom picture shows a male, not sure about the top one. You may have wait for that one to grow a bit more
Thanks for posting the pictures. The ph is good for your apistos and cacatuoides are not really too fussy about the water parameters.
From the pictures can't really say if they are a pair, but there are a couple of other potential problems the pictures point to.
One problem are the cories. They...
A picture of the tank might help to identify potential problems. Are you sure you have males and females? Can you test the water for pH, GH, KH? Nitrates and conductivity/TDS might also be useful to know
Scientific articles that require a subscription may be available through a university library either online or in person. You don't necessarily need to be a student but can sign in as a guest.
If you don't know the exact title article or the journal the librarians will be able to help you
While we are exchanging pictures of A. baenschi I thought i throw in one of my own :)
Not as nicely photographed as the others, but you can make out some differences compared to ADCs pics and Noddys second pic. Is it a different type of baenschi? I have no idea. I leave that discussion to people...
Keep in mind that light is an important factor in how we perceive colour. Most photos will have been taken with a flash angled in from the front or top. The bright wight light reflects from the pigments in the fish scales/skin and gives those beautiful colours, similar to what we see in...
I agree that if the authors have made some questionable decisions in the description then questions should be raised. In science that usually means publications by others dispute on the original article and providing evidence to support an alternative opinion. Some journals will also allow...
As far as I understand it the naming right to any species lies with whoever first describes it scientifically.
There are certain rules how the name has to be made up, i.e. is is usually derived from a name (e.g. discoverer or location or to honour someone) or a Greek or Latin word describing a...
The tank size may be a bit of a problem. Have a spare tank ready to rescue fish when aggression gets out of hand. Placing the tanks directly next to each other as you have done will work in your favour.
Especially for a small tank you will need a lot of structure in there - and by a lot I mean...
