    Apistogramma recommendations

Often the best dwarf Cichlids are those you can just find. It is often hard to find any specific Apistogramma at a LFS. Cast your net wider and look at online vendors and hobbyist breeders. thewetspottropicalfish.com is a good source as is sometime aquabid.com. I mean no slight to other...

    Most Peaceful Apistogramma?

Another good, as utilitarian, plant commonly known as Guppy Grass, Najas guadalupensis. It grows free float or rooted although it doesn't have a strong root structure. You want some plant which is very undemanding and a quick grower. These act as nitrate sponges and removing excess growth is...

    Most Peaceful Apistogramma?

I've had many wild caught discus pairs successfully raise broods in water with similar readings. The Apistogramma in your list are domesticated and Laetacara would also do fine. I think maintaining high water quality is usually more important than exact water chemistry. And you are keeping...

    Asia Breeders South East Asia

I've been able to login so it's been stable for me once got on. Several shops in downtown Singapore have several Apistogramma species, in case your in the neighborhood. Apistogramma mendezi are among those mentioned. Their site may be just having technical difficulties.

    Most Peaceful Apistogramma?

I think anewbies suggestion of some Laetacara spp. is well worth considering. Hard to pick out a more interesting Cichlid yet peaceable and able to defend itself. A fine representative of a "Good Cichlid" for this particular community tank. Big enough to be seen, small enough not to dominate the...

I logged right in and it has been years since my last visit. Thanks for persisting and sharing. Now I'm going to look and see what position they have taken on sharing Brazilian Killifish. They've become a hot potato in the USA. Brazil doesn't want tree huggers interfere with turning isolated...

Long time fish lover finally on here

You get to see different behavior in a paludarium. I never saw Nannostomus eques jumping clear out the water before to pick off every live brine shrimp nauplii left behind on the glass where I had allowed them to trickle down from an eyedropper. I did a double take on that but now I do it on...

    Altum Atapabo

A friend has about two dozen Altums including every strain shorelineaquatics has bred and they are perfect P.altum. My friend Ed, is from Venezuela and has been a longtime Altum connoisseur. He had to move some of his Altums in with eight big Uaru fernandezyepezi. You don't see that combination...

    A. Uaupesi? Took a chance...

I hope your red pencil fish prove me wrong but as much as I like pencil fish I find the red ones to be irascible. 10 or 12 in a 75 gallon tank is all I would consider trying and I don't think they are intimidated by most Apistogramma. Best of luck. They are truly beautiful as are your Apistogramma.

    Altum Atapabo

Save your self much heartache and expense and only obtain tank raised Pterphyllum altum. There is no better advice anyone can give. Tank raised P. altum have my become much easier to find for sale in recent years. The prices are not high compared to buying and losing many wild specimens over and...

    Most Peaceful Apistogramma?

I wouldn't expect any of the aquarium strains of A. cacatuoises to be problem in disposition even with a pair in a tank that large. My experience with them is that the tank strains are quite domesticated.

I'm getting the same redirected webpage so it isn't at your end. Used to be a busy forum but it's been years since my last visit. I just remembered being astonished by the specimens of SA Dwarf Cichlids shown by their owners.

    Masculine female

I agree it is interesting. One year old is getting up there in breeding age. 18 months is about as old as I usually lose hope of breeding Apistogramma. As I've mentioned before I consider Apistogramma to be borderline annual Cichlids. This acquisition of more masculine coloration by a proven...

I used to visit aquaticquotient.com and frequently saw beautiful photos and informative accounts by breeders. It was Singapore based but I had trouble connecting at 3AM PDST -8:00 Universal time.Any shortage of access to rare Apistogramma was never my impression in the years I was haunting the site.

    Spawning Challenges A.Elizabethe

I think your water is fine. 20 to 50 ppm isn't hard water by my lights. Seems about right for achieving a stable pH and F2 fish are likely better adjusted to aquarium life than perhaps the wild caught fish. Which species of the pencil fish species are you considering? Common names are so...

Long time fish lover finally on here

Worldwide I think there are many people keeping paludariums of various designs but when we try to keeping aquatic and semiaquatic animals it begins to get complicated. I've never kept any Apistogramma from the McMasteri complex but I don't see why they wouldn't do well in your setup. In fact I...

Long time fish lover finally on here

I have been running a hybrid paludarium/aquarium for 2 years. Mine is simpler and smaller than yours. I have the frame of a breeding net acting as a stand for a sandwich container in which I/m growing a couple of Sundew plants species, Drosera spatlularia and D. nidiformis. I've been considering...

    Spawning Challenges A.Elizabethe

Congrats on the spawns. I love to see a pair or female render brood care/ I would try some changes though. 1. I think Nannostomus beckfordi are not good dithers with regard to a breeding setup. I'd try N. eques or no dithers. Beckford's are somewhat atypical among the pencilfish in terms of...
