Hi all,
Recently quite a few specimens of the Indian Canara Cichlid, Etroplus canarensis, have reached Scandinavia. I got hold of 4 specimens, but might be getting more.
After searching the net I am yet to find any information about the breeding of this species. Has anyone on this forum...
Thanx for your views! I've yet to decide which species to select, I might give up Apistos this time in favour of some other dwarves. But it's hard to leave out Apistos in such a tank...:)
I'm absolutely going to keep some warmth-loving pl*cos as these are among my fav fishes, and I wish to...
Thanx for your replies people. I won't be setting up the tank for Discus to begin with, but I might add some on a later occasion. I will keep various catfishes (a.o. Hypancistrus species which prefers warm water) and some larger Cichlids, like Mesonauta insignis. The tank will be 7-800 liters so...
I'm setting up a new large Amazon tank, and since I'll keep the water quite warm (28-30 C), I was wondering about good Apisto alternatives for such high temperatures. I've kept Apistos under various temperature conditions before, but the ones I'm putting in this tank I'm planning to keep there...
Ordering Apistos from Peru is always good "fun" (depending on how you see it) because you never know what you'll get. They keep coming up with silly nicknames for the species instead of bothering to ID them correctly. So unless you got stocking space for every species on the list, it's hard to...
I'm not sure if this has been posted here before, but I stumbled across this short note regarding Apisto females choice of mates. It's not entirely new I suppose, but here it is anyway (interesting stuff) :http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/item.php?news=785
In my humble opinion you should not encounter any major problems with loss of fry if keeping mortenthaleri with your Apistos. The mortenthaleris may be somewhat quicker and more lively than i.e. N.eques, but they are by no means predators that will spend much time trying to snap the Apisto fry...
Nice one, Ted! I'm looking forward to reading how this goes. I'm considering ordering some B.wavrini from Glaser in Germany, but I'm just not sure if I'll have a buyer for them, which is kinda sad. Anyway I'm gonna follow your log closely to see how yours develop :) Good luck and congrats for...
Interesting, blueblue, I haven't even heard of this species so it will be interesting to see if anyone can give some information :) Have you seen any pics?
Rsa1; It's "Nannacara" adoketa.
Sherry; Kuhlii-loaches are not really loaches when it comes to what we think of as common loach-behaviour; they are very peaceful, shy bottom-dwelling fish which never bother other fish and will most likely be overlooked by your hillstreams. So don't worry...
Hi,
IF you should decide to add another Apisto species, some territorial disputes will certainly occur. The aggression varies from species to species and from individual to individual, but in my opinion you should avoid adding Apistos, and perhaps add a different kind of Dwarf Cihlid, i.e...
Konigwolf:
To sex these is not too hard if they're big enough. From 5 cm and up you should be able to tell them apart by taking a closer look at their pelvic fins. Of all the altispinosas I have either had or seen, the first couple of rays in the pelvic fins of the males are always a bit...
Well this sure cleared things up a bit, thank you Mike :) I think sometimes we get so carried away by our own enthusiasm (well at least I do) that we forget what we are interested in is actually a very narrow niche in the aquarium hobby itself! So yes obviously the publishers are reluctant to...
Thank you guys! BlueBlue; at the moment I only have a community tank, because that's all I got time to take care of :) However I work at a Local Fish Store, so I get to be around my favourite fishes as much as I like! In my community tank, which is 250 liters, I have Nannacara taenia and...
I was going through the Römer book and I came to think of how some well known Dwarf Cichlids are still without a name, when new species are described every year? I mean we have species like Apistogramma sp."Breitbinden" which has been known for over 20 years, why hasn't anyone described it...
It's strange in my opinion that those books Mike mentions hasn't been translated to English. Surely there must be a great sales potential there? And how hard can it really be to find someone to do the translation if they paid for it? Is it because the publisher simply don't think it's worth the...
Hej!
I think you should consider moving the males. First of all, the father will possibly guard the territory for a while, but he will probably become ready to spawn again sooner than the female, which can cause problems. If you had them in a bigger tank where the male could have a harem with...
Hey everybody,
My name is Haakon, I'm 27, live in Norway and work in at a LFS. I've been keeping and breeding Cichlids, mainly Dwarves, since 1990. I think this is a great forum and I figured I'd better be a part of it the sooner the better:) Looking forward to partcipate!
