Yeh its a real bummer!! if i cant find any macs ill go for A. bitaeniata or similar, closest to the rio tapajos as possible to try to stick with the biotope
Continuing the eternal search for D. maculatus in Australia... ive contacted all the reputable shops on the east coast and i cant find any...
Fishchicks says she had some but no longer orders them because of too few sales. Ill have another go at convincing her...
So, was going to ask, does...
Very interesting thread, i quite enjoyed the read. Its made me look for some scientific description material on the Dicrossus Genus in general,
Thanks :)
Firstly, your fish most probably are not A. viejita. They would be A. macmasteri. (i would be surprised if i ever saw fish labeled as A viejita, that were actually A. viejita.)
"Wild A. macmasteri in the commercial trade are collected mostly in the immediate vicinity the city of Vilavicencio...
Use Leaves, im not sure what leaves are suitable in your area, someone might be able to suggest, but they should leach tannins and help lower the ph. Same with Driftwood. Its not much but it will help
The temperature seems a little high for apistogramma by the way. (this probably isnt the problem, just noticed it.)
Aggression is fairly normal, you just have to manage it with lots of hiding places for the female. Im not sure whether A. hongsloi are monogamous (single pair) or polygamous...
Colouring up like that is often a sign of aggression or breeding but I dont think any 1 "mood" is more natural than another, like being happy or sad or excited are all natural moods for humans, they come and go. I guess its the same for fish.
Not a new species, simply a hybrid of 2 closely related apistogramma species. Selling/distributing hybrid fry as a different (new) species is generally frowned upon, and doesnt contribute much to the hobby.
As display fish though, they are beautiful. Nice photos too ;)
Apologies for coming across as inconsiderate of the fishes needs. I was trying to make things simple to understand. Although, having a coarser or inaccurate substrate to the biotype could be detrimental to Wild or F1, F2 etc. specimens, most commercially common fish are probably bred in bare...
The only consideration i put into substrate is aesthetic and chemistry. I wouldnt know about those choices, but as long as it is pleasing to you and it wont buffer the water up then they should be fine.
I use Aquasoil Amazonia. Very good for plants, helps keep the ph down to the level apistos...
This is an awesome sounding tank, could you link me the information regarding A borelli and A. trifasciata cohabiting?
This thread has given me the same sort of idea for my 4ft 55gal setup im researching and am soon to start working on. Im thinking about 2 Apistogramma species in the same tank...
