this is a very good idea and I will try to find out. I cannot get much information from their website primarily because it is only offered in Korean, and my Korean reading ability is not-so-great.
well this seems like encouraging information. whenever I measure my tap water using Tetra GH Kit, it always changes color after 2 or 3 drops. I don't know how reliable the test is though.
I was really surprised to read this. Does "seems to be work fine" also including breeding success? I am using RO/DI water for my uaupesi tank and I was debating using a mix of RO/DI and tap water for my A. erythrura pair. According to my meter, the tap water here has a 110ppm TDS and I figured...
haha! given that she won't even touch the water in my tanks, convincing her to go fish collecting in the wild would be quite the tough assignment. someday I will follow your suggestion and go on a collection trip to SA, but for now, it's just a great dream :D
Aside from the cost of the trip, isn't it also quite expensive to have the fish transported back to your home? My wife will be taking a business trip to Brazil in September ... I wonder if I can convince her to collect some fish for me on the way back ...
It took me over a week to capture my A. uaupesi to transfer them to my breeding setup. I was amazed at how smart these fish seemed - as soon as I dipped the net into the water they would immediately dart into hiding in a cave or crevice. I didn't want to tear up my plants and aquascape to get...
I too am curious about this as my adult apistos seem to have no interest in BBS - presumably because they are too small. I gave it a very, very rudimentary attempt a few weeks ago and lost all my shrimp as well.
There is some conflicting information out there about what is needed. Some people...
1500 Eur for 18 tanks sounds very inexpensive given that each tank comes with light, filter and heater. :D
1000 Eur extra per year, right?
I can't wait to see the end result of this project. So far it looks fantastic.
Thank you guys. It's come a long way since March when I first purchased the apistos. Still, it's nothing compared to some of the other real biotope tanks from other members of this site.
Also, I'm starting to realize that I'm going to have to purchase a proper camera and learn some photography...
Very nice setup. I also want to set up a fish rack someday but wife + tiny apartments in Korea make this idea just a fantasy.
I'm curious - how does your wife feel about your involvement in this hobby? I "only" have 4 tanks and my wife thinks I am too obsessed =/
If you were 20 years old in 67/68 then you're about the same age as my father. I did a little searching and found that your Korean currency was designed and produced from 1962 to 1966 and only lasted about 10-15 years. Korean currency has actually been redesigned 3 times since then to its...
I am very curious what brought you to Korea at that time, Mike. Unless I am mistaken (you're right that I was not alive then), Korea was a very underdeveloped and unstable country at that time. Some would say that Korea was underdeveloped and unstable all the way up to about 1990.
P.S. the 1...
Yea I was expecting it to go down through the combination of distilled water and peat/leaves - just goes to show how ignorant I still am about water chemistry and blackwater!
Well, in some ways failures are more valuable than successes. Now I know that I should not mix the distilled with much...
As a continuation of my thread in the Apistogramma section, here are some new photos of my tank with a pair of A. uaupesi.
Tank is filled mostly with various species of Echinodorus, Dwarf Sag, some crypts and a lot of Amazon Frogbit. There are a few things in there, like the dwarf rasbora...
Thanks for the advice Mike. I knew they were blackwater but I wasn't aware of those other aspects. I will pass for now then. To be honest I prefer to go with something a bit easier for my next Apisto.
I did a quick test of the tap water pH before heading to work. The result was strong blue, definitely the highest value that can be shown by the API test kit. My guess, probably around 8. I realized that I made the mistaken assumption that adding a lot of distilled water would automatically...
Hi Mike,
It's an HM Digital TDS-3 meter which I calibrated just a few days ago using 342 ppm NaCl solution. Also, it's somewhat well-known that the tap water in Seoul is relatively soft.
The water was not really circulated through the peat, just placed in a mesh bag next to the sponge filter...
So I did my first pH check of the tank water today using a Tetra freshwater pH test (which has a supposed range of 5 to 10 - at least those are the numbers displayed on the card) and the result was very strange ... a pH of around 7. Baffled, I tried with an API pH test (which has a range of 6 to...
