Nope, I can't think of anything that actually requires a large grain substrate off the top of my head actually. But normally apistos require very soft water, which your snails likely will not enjoy.
Oh and I forgot to mention, I would definitely switch to a fine substrate in any place you possibly can. It benefits Apistogramma greatly, and is worth the effort.
For me the ultimate beginning apisto is A. cacatuoides. These are hardy fish that naturally occur in areas with a higher TDS and pH than some of the more finicky apisto sp. Also I keep A. cacatuoides in tanks with red cherries and they will eat adults when they can catch them as well. Mine...
Hey guys, in a few weeks I will be purchasing some A. sp. winklefleck, and I've began looking through some info on them to make sure I have a nicely setup tank that suits them. I've looked through tom c's site as it was the only place I could really find any info. About all I got was a...
Yes weekdays are a mess for me as well lol. I think Sunday would be the best bet for me. What time would you like to meet up sunday? I'll have to set my phone alarm so I don't forget! I will pm you my phone number as well.
Yes I'd certainly be interested still. I'm sure I can figure something out with it. Free is free, I'll fix it somehow lol. So how would I go about getting it?
Now don't go trying to reinvent the wheel there Mr Ha. You had an excellent suggestion the first round. Maybe when it's described we can lobby for it to be Apistogramma tomsi
Mike I believe both are due to the black spots from the disease wild apistogramma are known to sometimes get. I believe it is somehow avian related? I can't recall as I have read very little on it.
And culprit, thanks. They are already trying to breed again through the divider. The female...
I'll get a few later, but it looks ugly now as I had to add a divider. The male ate the first batch of eggs, and ate 10 of my free swimmers from the second batch. Used to look much better
Haha mike, you know it's funny you say that, because it is exactly what I said. I told him if he wanted to do it the tanks needed leaf litter untill it overflowed from the top!
You're exactly right and thank you for clarifying for me. I hadn't even considered the fact he said pearl danios when I said celestial pearl danio. Good catch.
He is right I use Danio margaritatus, and I would most certainly not recommend the use of Danio albolineatus(pearl danio). I have...
Sadly no, they school quite loosely. I have a "school" of about 13. 1 of them prefers to be all alone. The rest kind of just wander the upper middle of the tank. They only school tightly during wc's
Unless you plan on removing the male after the eggs have been fertilized, I recommend keeping only a pair in that tank.
As far as using rummy nose as target/dither fish, it is not a bad idea but there are many fish better suited for the job that are less likely to predate on fry. The 2 I use...
While I don't recall much from when I read about it a specific quote sticks in my head which was "surprised by the lack of almost any other life (or maybe fish)" besides Apistogramma sp. abacaxis. The pH was in the 3's as mike mentioned and had a very low TDS. All in all the lake has some very...
