Hey there, I keep my tanks at 80 degrees F. For you non-Americans who don't like to be original and pave your own paths, that's 26.7 C. My cacatuoides are very prolific at this temp and breed within days of me removing the current fry.
Other things I do are, cold water changes. When I do a...
I have LOTS of foods I feed. Their main diet consists of dainichi color fx baby size pellets. I found that my apistos, even though they can swallow the baby size, which I believe to be .5 mm, they spit out the .5 mm. I bought a mortal and pestle and ground up most of it and my fish go apeshit...
Wow! You have a lot of the ones I really would love to have! In particular the bitaeniata and the abacaxis. Lol. Now that promts another question, everything I have been told has led me to believe that an apistogramma will generally only live 3 years and that's if you take excellent care of...
Man mike, something like that sounds so exciting, and unbelievably rewarding. Yea the part I was most concerned with was the exporting of the fish. I imagine you need some sort of permitting to get this done and just thinking about the logistics alone is mind boggling. I have talked to the gf...
I use hatchetfish and celestial pearl danios as my dithers. Here is a quick pic I snapped of my male playing with them. He likes to go up top and flare at them occasionally!
I love my stocking selection for this tank. Everything gets along so well. I will say I believe my male has eaten...
Thank you gerald and mike both for your responses. Gerald very helpful and advice, and I'm hoping one day I can be identifying them in the wild!
Mike, the second book you mentioned, is that in english and German as well? I, no matter how long I may stare at it, can not read german. And you...
Thanks again darrel, ordered the DATZ book you recommended. Can't wait for it to arrive!
Soon I will have a little image of Mike Wise to set my coffee on!
Thanks darrel! Looking into all this info immediately!
There is one more thing I have been wondering about. Me and my girlfriend travel a lot. When we get a larger place the girlfriend already knows I will be building a large breeding room that I intend to start off with apistogramma since...
Hey all, seeing all the knowledgeable people here able to I.d. fish on a whim I have begun to really want to be able to do this as well.
Is there a certain book I should pick up? Is there some Internet location I should scour? What do I buy or where do I go?
I also would like to find lots of...
Hm it is quite interesting. It has a lot of qualities of a female, except I usually look for black pelvic fins which it doesn't have. Perhaps like a previous poster said it is a sub dominant male. Who knows lol. And grumpy is quite pretty lol. Nice fish!
Ok so after a few weeks my fry both 1 and 1/2 month Olds and the newly freeswimming are taking their repashy gel foods. I am using the "spawn and grow" formula.
They tend to pick at it, swim away, come back later, pick at it once, swim away ect. They do eat it but it's not what I expected...
Hm, so how large was he when you got him. This is second hand information that I believe I read mike wise post, as I often dig through old posts looking for answers to my own questions, but I believe I read mike wise say cacatuoides are extremely slow growers and some breeders may have their...
Thank you gerald. This has been my only feeding as I ran my culture too low and I'm allowing it to grow out more now, but when I do feed them again I will be certain to chop them for my fishes safety.
Also, what is that fish in your avatar? It's beautiful!
To my very novice eyes they both appear female. When I sex apistogramma I generally look for signs of the female, which are the shorter first 3 rays of the dorsal, and black in the pelvic fins. I do not see any black in the pelvic fins but the picture is not very good for that, and it is not...
Thanks mike. With this female she protected her fry in the community tank for a month untill I saw her fattening up, at that point I knew they had to come out or she would lay another batch and chase away the fry or eat them. I then siphoned as many fry as I could out over a period of 3 days...
