    Depends on your local water supply... Some have soft water out of the tap....I have liquid rock ;)

    Note! I wouldn't try to maintain a fully grown pair of Apistos in a 5 gallon tank.....however You could keep sexes separated and just use the tank for breeding However ....whilst this may work to reproduce fish....it will rob you of the pleasure of watching them interact with each other then...
