If you have a reliable lfs dealer and they offer quality black worms, you should be fine. Besides, I have found this to be the best way to get the pair into breeding shape. Of course, mixing the blackworms with other frozen fare is a great way to maintain their dietary needs. Just my opinion.
That is just fine. I keep some of my males in solo tanks until I am ready to try breeding them with a female. The only disadvantage I can see is that they are really fun to watch when there is a female in the tank. Plus they exhibit more pronounced color when trying to impress a female.
The rainbows are thriving. I have had them in there about 3 years along with the barbs and I have only lost on barb (after 2 years).
Thanks for the advice with the apistos, I am not sure which route to take, but it is evident that the fry would not last long in the 30 gal tank.
