    proper PH lowering

The safest and probably most used way to lower pH is by using peat. This can bring it down a little bit below 4, provided your KH is below about 2. I do this separate from the tank in a barrel for this purpose. Then I simply add the peat water when I change the water. If you only do this at...

    A. panduro

It's normal for them to show the lateral line under stress, yes. Let them settle in a bit and they will probably look quite "normal" :)

    Natural varieties of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

It's definitely not to hot. 30C would be fine too. They are very heat tolerant. i once gave some of mine af heat cure (not sure how to say that in english?) like many discus keepers do. 35C was no problem at all. In this case the temperature is a compromise between the well being of the fish...

    Natural varieties of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

Andrew: It's impossible to say if they were wild caught, but they definitely look like wild type M. ramirezi :) There really is no reason to have sold them as wild caught if they are not. I would look at their behaviour aquarium strain rams tend not to very shy as opposed to wild caughts.

Breeding care, instinct or learning process?

I'm not sure I understand. As I understood Nightowl, the male parent chased of the female and went on to eat the larvae himself. The female may have been a capable parent raiser, but that was not my point. My point was that none of the offspring were parent raised and still raised their own...

Breeding care, instinct or learning process?

I think you already have your experiment here, Ed, only in reverse. How could there be any learning aspect whatsoever in Nightowls rams raising their broods?

Breeding care, instinct or learning process?

Nothing wrong with speculating. A great hobby of mine too :) I just meant that it would be nice with some experiments backing it up. I don't think we disagree on that. Maybe not on so much else really. I might have been a little one eyed reading your opinion. I'm sorry if I came across a...

Breeding care, instinct or learning process?

Ed, I think you are discussing two separate issues. The parents' ability to defend their brood, which may very well be learned to some extent, and the parents ability not to eat their eggs/wrigglers. I really don't see how a behaviour like that can be learned. I don't think that trial and error...

    Natural varieties of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

As promised here is some footage of one of my rams. This is the biggest male at feeding time. The colours on this little fellow... well i guess this is the reason that I keep fish:)

    Natural varieties of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

There are differences. I don't know if the colours are more vivid, but they are definitely more mood dependant. The most obvious difference in coloration is that the tank bred forms usually have a black spot in the dorsal fin just above the lateral spot. Wild type rams do not have this. I am not...

    Ketepang leaf

Btw you may also want to try dried tobacco leaves, since you are so convinced about the lack of toxins in dried leaves:wink:

    Ketepang leaf

nevertheless it has been written on several occasions in this forum that fig leaves are toxic. By all means take your chances with your own fish. Just be aware that a simple survival test tells you nothing about the long term effects.

    Ketepang leaf

They are not T. cattapa!!! If they are fig leaves they could be poisoning to your fish:eek: Ed described their appearance very precise. Ketapang leaves do not have wavy edges like your leaves and the veination is different. Please look at the pictures I linked to. The difference is quite...

    Ketepang leaf

I'm sorry, but they don't look like ketapang leaves. I don't know what they are, and I certainly would not use them without knowing what they are. Look here for comparison: http://www.arofanatics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=245456 Lars

Breeding care, instinct or learning process?

He, he:biggrin: I really don't understand why there are not more people learning Danish. It would make things so much easier:wink: I think there is a possibility that he will do an article in English, so let's see. Anyway I promise to give you guys a resume of the results. In my own...

a garbage forum cnfish with a garbage moderator TRD

How embarrasing for him:eek: I think you should at least contact the forum. Don't you know anyone who uses the forum? Then it could be done through this person. Without being a legal expert, I actually think you could demand a compensation. Using other peoples photos and putting another...

Breeding care, instinct or learning process?

I don't think it has anything to do with learning either. I do think that there could be an effect on the longer term if eggs are artificially hatched continuously for many generations, but that would be an effect on the gene pool by artificial selection. A friend of mine is performing a...

    Natural varieties of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

I'll do my best:) It has been around 14 years since I last had a pair of wild rams, so it's kind of hard to compare to this vague memory i have of their looks. I do remember them as quite big fish compared to the domesticated strains, though. I also remember them as very productive. Off...

    Natural varieties of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

Thank you, Mike. No way around spelling myself through yet another german article, I guess  I asked because i just got some very nice wild rams imported from Colombia, and the females hardly have any red color on the belly, but it is probably just mood related. I guess I just have...
