After wondering if the pair was ever going to spawn and fearing the female might burst if she got any fatter, raising the temp to ~77F and doing a 25% water change with tannin-rich, softer water did the trick!
Just prior to spawning
Just after spawning in the 'apisto-hut' behind her.
Thanks for the FYI, Mike.
Here is the abstract.
As I'm sure you saw in the abstract, populations from both the Moliwe River and the Nyong River system - considerably further south - have the potential to be new species, as Lamboj states, pending further studies. Also, that the genus...
Lol, Fart, I think I absorbed some of your photography talent by osmosis! It's the same camera (which costs less than a Canon 100mm Macro lens ) and the same settings I normally use. She just happened to be right up by the aquarium glass so I was able to get a very close photo. Thanks for...
At least on this female A. gephyra in brood care coloration, there are no dark pigments on spines/anterior portion of her pelvic fins. I wonder if this is diagnostic of A. gephyra?
Compare with female A. agassizii in brood care.
Thanks for introducing yourself and welcome. Absolutely one of the best naturalistic aquariums I've seen - very beautiful and well composed - having the two levels with the root structure looks great! I've not ever been a fan of Oscars, but your aquarium makes them look fantastic...
Thanks for photos - they look similar. I've heard of C. sp. Leza, but I have not seen what the distinguishing features are between that form and others. Did you breed them?
Lol! I think apistos are a lot 'easier' fish :p than nanos. The female C. dimidiatus I have is as ripe as a melon and displays to the male all the time, but he ain't having anything to do with her - I think he needs glasses!o_O. I"ve never bred Nano/Congochomis so I'll just have to see how...
This pair have spawned for the first time. Female is guarding one of the apisto huts. Whereas before spawning the male had her constantly hiding and on the run, now that they have spawned, she is guarding her territory and keeping him away with vigorous displaying and tail beats (see photo of...
Nice work, Rich, on breeding those - I'd ask to do a trade but I've got my hands full with the species I'm working with now. My gephyra pair have spawned couple of days ago, hopefully I'll get some fry from them. Maybe a trade next year some time?
Actually it would be C. (Congochromis) dimidiatus (as it currently stands) depending on if you are a lumper or a splitter...
See Mike's post: http://www.apistogramma.com/forum/threads/new-dwarf-cichlid-genus-congochromis.6570/
Looks like Congochromis is comprised of 5 species -
C. dimidiatus...
This female was looking ripe...
So I removed the glass separation from the tank and the pair began a wonderful display dance...what a neat species
This one pair came in as C. sabinae, which I would have been happy to have, but as it turns out, they look a whole lot more like C. dimidiatus. ID opinions welcomed.
If, in fact, that is what they are, I guess I'll just have to make do with them;).
I will do my best to spawn them...
