peat granules to lower PH and soften water?

Thanks gerald and regani. :) You all have definitely helped me understand things better. And make me feel more assured about the effectiveness of peat filtration. Right now, my guesses are: 1. Some Ca and Mg is stuck on the peat - this makes up the loss in measured gH. 2. Some Ca and Mg are...

peat granules to lower PH and soften water?

I recently started using peat moss from gardening centres, after checking out various threads including those here - thanks very much to those who've blazed the way. :) Tapwater (with Prime) = pH 7+, dGH 5, dKH 3 After peat filtration = pH 4+, dGH 3, dKH 0 I guess KH goes to zero because the...

    Soil

In Singapore the few apisto collectors/breeders I do know all use ADA aquasoil, usually Amazonia or Africa, because Malaya is too crumbly. They love using it. Nobody's mentioned any issues. In fact, everyone I talk to about using a sand / peat moss mix doesn't understand why I'd go to the...

Thanks, Mike. :) Tried searching for Burchard on Google Scholar and it's behind a paywall. So much for the age of (low quality) information! (If anyone can email me a copy, purely for educational purposes, I would be most grateful.) I did see a copy of Cichlid Atlas Vol 2 at a local library...

    Are these fungused eggs?

Quick update - the female's abandoned the cave since and no more fungused eggs are coming out. Water parameters are way off this time so better luck next time. Case closed! :)

This is so cool. I had no idea the colours signalled anything. Any recommended reading to understand this more thoroughly?

    Are these fungused eggs?

The little white thing in the moss. I first saw several at lunchtime, and wondered what they were. Then just a moment ago, I noticed cotton-woolly stuff growing on them, so - ah hah! fungused eggs, maybe! (Unplanned pregnancy - hooray! :D But fungus :( ) Then right after I turkey bastered them...

    Request: Dwarf Crenicichla ID

Yeah they are! I'll try again when I get my hands on a proper camera. Anyway I can't get pics now that I'm dosing the whole tank with API Fungus Cure (that's Malachite Green and Acriflavin), and it's all green now. Surprisingly, though, the green disappears rather quickly - maybe I should turn...

    Request: Dwarf Crenicichla ID

It's probably lighting - the colouring around the ocelli look pretty consistently red/pink-based to me. So mysterious. I took some more photos today but they're mostly blurry again. Will check back in once I have good pics!

    Request: Dwarf Crenicichla ID

Thanks, Mike and dwarfpike. :) So far, the orangeness isn't anywhere near the ocelli, it's on the rear edges of the dorsal, anal and tail fins. So maybe we can rule out a Colombian wallacii. It does look quite similar to this fish...

    Request: Dwarf Crenicichla ID

Hi everyone My local fish shop brought in what they called "Crenicichla regani", catch location "Orinoco" (which isn't very helpful), and I wonder if anyone here can help to ID it more precisely. Here are some pics of the dominant female (sorry for low quality - my phone isn't so good). They're...

    Hello from Singapore

Hello I'm from Singapore too and just signed up after lurking for ages. I'm pretty new to apistos, and currently keep A. trifasciata, A. bitaeniata 'Tefe', and a dwarf Crenicichla from Venezuela (not sure about species, looks like what Glaser sells as C. cf regani 'Orinoco'). Mun, if you would...
