I agree with your comments regarding environment and gender distribution. However, who is to tell whether 50/50 tap/RO is better or worse than 100% RO for the Njanje, leave alone other environmental factors such as temp., diet, population density, and presence of predators (which all might be...
I always sold all my fry before they were large enough for reliable sexing. I spawn them in RO water (sex ratio should be okay), but grow them out in a 50/50 mix of RO/tap.
I'm on a business trip in DC right now but will be back in Lincoln on Sunday.

I grew out some more F1 Njanje: 10 fish for $20 plus shipping (flat rate: $15 USPS Priority). No box charge or other hidden charges. Live arrival guarantee only if buyer upgrades to overnight courier. Continental U.S. only. Send PM if interested. I'llbe out of town this WED through SUN.
I had to move up this old thread: Two of Uli Schliewen's students produced two spawns of the Superslender and published a nice report in DATZ. Uli was so kind to send me a PDF copy. I can't post the article here because of copyright issues. Contact me if you have questions. I was even...
Ed: I'm still not taking a chance with the females. I'd like to devote a second tank in my fishroom to another group of alcalicus as insurance against desaster (broken glass) and to maintain some genetic diversity. Once that's accomplished, I'll let the females hold to term and pass any surplus...
I finally had the time to take a couple of pics -- the three juvies are pushing 1/3" now. I stripped another nine eggs from a female today and think that another female is holding.
Some forum members had approached me this past winter, inquiring about the availability of Njanje. I tried to ship them once, but it was simply too cold. This past week we had a pretty good warm-up in Nebraska and I successfully completed two transactions, one for Njanje and one for S. irvinei...
Finally!
After two failed attempts (parents eating the eggs), I decided not to take a chance with my most recent third spawn. I transferred the eggs into a tumbler and managed to get about 15 fry swimming ruweti. They are tiny but, so far, seem to be doing well. Once they get a little bigger...
I managed to raise three free-swimming alcalicus from another female that I stripped a while back. Finally! I'm cautiously optimistic, although the threesome is probably not totally out of the woods yet! Now that I worked out what needs to be done, I hope to be able to raise some more fry in the...
Check this (http://www.aquanet.tv/Video/237) out for a 10-minute videoclip of Anton's 2009 visit to Cameroon. Even if you don't speak German, it's worthwhile watching. Check out the very end of the clip with our own, Ted Judy. What's in that box, Ted?
The fish were imported from Germany by Mark Denaro (Anubiasdesign), and he designated "German breeder" as a source. Not much help!
Sadly, the pair ate all the eggs last night. Well, with each failed spawn I learn something to do better the next time.

Jeff,
they spawned the day after a routine 30% water change, but I suspect that was pure co-incidence. The pair had been courting and coloring up for days prior to the spawn.
The timing for this to happen isn't very good, as I will be leaving for a 1-wk business trip overseas tomorrow. The...
One of my pairs of Tilapia ruweti spawned again, for the second time. The first go-around the eggs were eaten in a heart beat. This time, the pair seems to be doing better. They fended off all the other ruweti in the tank, which I had to move to another tank. So far, the pair seems to be caring...
Thanks Jeff, but for the time being I'm only cautiously optimistic. Never had to work with larvae that young. I peeked in the tank this morning. Larvae and the holding female seem to be doing well (both are isolated in two small tanks sitting inside the big tank).

I've had some of my females holding a few times, but they always ended up eating the fry. About 10 days ago, I noticed that one of the females was holding again and put her in isolation. I'm not a friend of stripping fish, but this time I didn't want to take a chance by waiting too long. I've...
No, unfortunately not. I used to keep a pair of the real Matadi a while back (bought them from Tony Orso), but lost them before they got to spawn. They were two of the prettiest fish I ever kept.
