The tank looks like a great start to a really nice planted tank. However...
Your choice of tankmates is cause for concern. Mixing Lake Malawi cichlids (the vesuvituts, acei, melanochromis, etc) with South American fish (neon tetras, angelfish, etc) is asking for trouble. Lake Malawi cichlids...
Sorry, but I don't see an extraordinary difference outside of normal behavior and reaction to surroundings. Example: a male apisto displaying in front of a mirror will react differently than in a natural single-male environment. A female that is ready to spawn versus a female who has eggs...
I like to leave the fry with the parents for two to three weeks after the fry are free swimming, and then siphon some out into another tank, leaving some for the parents to continue to raise (or eat when they breed again). If you have tons of cover in the tank, it's likely a few fry will...
20 talls to me, are a good tank with dithers that are going to use the top part of the tank; otherwise, they aren't much different than a 10.
For an apisto pair only, the 15 is going to save you some vertical space (same footprint as 20high), so you could fit in more 15s in the same square...
Alot of it depends on the fish; for lake malawi fish, I like to use a 6500k and 10000k bulb to accentuate the blues.
For apistos, I use a 6500k and 5500k bulb; with dark substrate.
A darker substrate and the proper decor will bring the colors out of the fish. I also like the tanin look, so I...
Yeah, I think I'm just going to stick with plain ole pencilfish; which, in fact, aren't really plain. And, found out, if you buy them by the box (1,000+), they're really cheap...per fish.
I can't imagine them expending energy to not take care of them. They are probably so small, and barely wiggling, you can't see them in the cracks of the gravel. In other words, they're doing a good job at being parents!
Water changes, water changes, and more water changes. I'm currently in the process of reworking my fish room into a situation where I can make water changes almost completely automatically; and doing as much as 50% water change everyday. A friend of mine uses this same system and grows out...
I'm going to throw out an educated guess and say A. eunotus "orangeschwanz". I think the juvenile, younger, cruzi normally show a more pronounced and defined horizontal bar near the lateral line. Looks like a very nice specimen.
I use Otocinclus sp. as they are from South America and do a great job at removing algae; although, I couldn't pinpoint a specific region they are from as there are many species and I think that they are really difficult to tell apart. They stay fairly small (1 to 2.5 inches), seem to be...
Did some experiments, and Ttw was right -- the endlers did not do as well, long term, in the lower pH water. It was worth a shot. Sometimes you just have to learn first hand. Thanks for the input.
Here are where I have gotten my wilds from...

There are several others, but these are my favorite. Jeff (from aquaticclarity) is on here frequently and is a top notch guy. He gets the really rare stuff, and has...
Welcome! If your 90 has the same foot print as a 75 (48" x 18"), you have lots of possibilities.
1) do you want them to raise lots of fry?
2) do you want a good community mix?
One of my favorite setups is a 75 with a trio of Apistogramma bitaeniata (1m, 2f); a dozen or so neon tetras (or...
You could use the search function on the site and find some really good threads. Try searching "dither". Seems like this is a repetitive topic - maybe time for a sticky?
