In all my years keeping A. atahualpa, I have never witnessed the actual spawning action. The holes on my caves (inverted clay flower pots with a hole in the bottom) is probably not large enough for the male to get into; so the idea that he "crop dusts" her eggs is plausible.
My male resides...
I've never had much luck at keeping more than one pair or M/F/F trio of any variety of 'agassizi' in a tank 48" x 18" footprint, and that is with a LOT of cover. I don't know why, but they just seem to be more overly aggressive for me. I think you could try two pair of the blue agassizis if...

Alder cones -- although, unless you have a lot of them, you aren't going to make a huge dent in the pH or hardness of the water. Personally, I'd recommend a section of panty hose tied off on two ends filled with peat moss placed directly into the tank. One handful of peat moss per 20 gallons...
I'm not sure about the 75mm to 300mm lense, but I take all my photos using an 18mm - 135mm lens with the lens extended to the 135 range, standing about six to 12 inches away from the glass. When I use a flash, I tilt the camera down at an angle (camera mounted flash) to minimize the flash...
Welcome! I faced the same ordeal with frogs and lizards...it was them or the wife. The wife knows how to cook, so it was an easy decision. I'd love to see some photos of your fish room. Hope you enjoy your time here.
