Should I get a pair or a single male?

I love rasboras and there are a few species I have my eye on myself, but for this tank I am hoping to keep it biotope.

Should I get a pair or a single male?

I find *some* pencil fish to have really cool behavior (like eques) and *some* pencil fish to have a cool appearance (like corals), but considering the difficulty I’ve had with Apistogramma, I don’t expect to be able to pick and choose the specific species, and the one I’m most likely to find...

Should I get a pair or a single male?

Nah, if it needs a heater I’ll get one. Just thought that, if it wasn’t neccesary for the fish I planned to keep, I could save a few bucks that way. But it sounds like I do need one

Should I get a pair or a single male?

In that case, I’ll get a heater.

Should I get a pair or a single male?

I also wanted to get y’all’s opinion on a question I’ve raised on the other forum: my house stays between 65-76 (depending on season) year round, 68-72 for most of that. I know that a lot of these fish come from shaded streams that aren’t as hot as we think they are; do you think I could keep an...

Should I get a pair or a single male?

This isn’t the perfect place to post it, but I don’t have a journal thread yet so I thought I’d share with y’all the progress I made today! I’ve added a black background, leaves, and a nice piece of driftwood to the tank (currently still floating). I also transferred a crypt from my other tank...

Should I get a pair or a single male?

Like I said, I am already familiar with keeping otos and have had a group in my other tank for about 6 months. I know not put them in a brand-new tank. I keep forgetting that y’all aren’t familiar with my prior experience, since I usually use the [Tropical Fish Forum], but I’m not a complete...

Should I get a pair or a single male?

I already have otocinclus in my other tank and have had success with them

Should I get a pair or a single male?

If I get a single male instead of a breeding pair, does that open up my tank mate options more? Would it get along well with neons? Could I possibly keep bottom dwellers like otos?

Should I get a pair or a single male?

I am drawn to dwarf cichlids because of their brooding behavior. I want to watch the male and female court and I want to watch them guard their eggs and raise their young. I would love to CASUALLY breed these fish, i.e. own a male and female, get excited when they have babies, and maybe...

Should I get a pair or a single male?

Still coming back to this question. Would it be that bad if I just had a pair but let them eat the babies? Or had fry predators? I had been considering neons instead of pencils for a while anyway. If any fry did survive, I could also pretty easily put them in my (peaceful and currently very...

    Hi all!

Yeah I started another thread asking about the pair/single question and decided I’m probably better off getting a single male.

Should I get a pair or a single male?

I’m planning a 20 gal with Agassizii and pencils. I originally wanted a male/female pair, since the brooding behavior is cool to me. But I’ve realized that I don’t have the resources needed for serious breeding. I don’t have room for a separate fry/grow out tank. So I’d like some advice from...

    Hi all!

If by “community” you meant the fact that there are gonna be pencils too, I’ve been told by a few different experienced apisto breeders that pencils are well-adapted to be kept with a breeding pair, since their mouths are too small to eat fry and they can hide in floaters from aggression.

    Hi all!

The new 20 will be just apistos and pencils; the apistos aren’t going in the community tank. I like the idea of a pair, but I’m not necessarily prepared for a full-on breeding operation, which is one of the reasons I’m aiming for a non-cactuoides species, since I figured they wouldn’t be as...

    Hi all!

I’ve been fish keeping for about half a year and have one 20long community tank. I’m looking to soon get a second tank (another 20 long) with pencils and a pair of Agassizii. I’m already a member of the Tropical Fish Forum, and I can see there’s some familiar faces here! (@Seisage@anewbie ) On...
