    apistogramma advice

Eco-complete does raise the KH, and therefore the pH when it's new whereas Aquasoil lowers the KH and pH when it's new, as well as releasing ammonia. I understand that the pH buffering effect of Eco-complete does wear off after a while but can't be specific I'm afraid as I've only used...

    apistogramma advice

A 3 stage system will be fine. I don't think you need the 4th, deionising stage for freshwater fish. I would look at a water butt/barrel and an automatic shut-off too as it makes using RO water almost as easy as using tap water - otherwise you have to wait a long while for the RO unit to...

    apistogramma advice

I don't know about in Aus but over here you can get a good quality 50 gpd system for £80. That's all I have and it fills a 100l water barrel with an automatic shut-off system and provides me with about 80l of water in one go and it refills overnight so I could do that amount of water changes...

    apistogramma advice

The effect of Aquasoil is only temporary in my experience and when new the aquasoil will release pretty big amounts of ammonia into the water. I would not use it for water conditioning. It is incredible for growing aquatic plants in though and you will never achieve results as good with other...

    EBR x GBR paired/breeding/eggs

Sounds like you will have to remove the normal ram females to get the males interested in the blue ones. Well done on all the eggs though. If you're running short of space maybe you could leave the eggs with the parents. After a couple of goes they may well get the hang of parenting and it'll...

    Apisrogramma sp. fresa

It's formally called Apistogramma eremnopyge. A great fish and I have an old male swimming around in a tank here! Do a quick search on this forum and you should get lots of information about it.

worms growing out of the head, help!!!!

I wouldn't personally use a pH controller as what you want in a planted tank is a stable CO2 level to help reduce algae and a pH controller trades fluctuating CO2 levels for a stable pH. IME the pH can fluctuate pretty wildly due to CO2 and the fish don't mind at all. I turn my CO2 off an hour...

    strange growth/ooze

I agree with all said above. The liquid from the culture can travel down the tubing but if you put in a bubble counter you can trap that liquid in the bubble counter water and stop it getting into the tank. Just clean the bubble counter out every so often.

worms growing out of the head, help!!!!

That's not quite right, in a high-tech planted tank actually light is the limiting factor. Nutrients and Carbon available to the plants should be in slight excess and then the plants, which are far more efficient at utilising the light in the system than algae, can dominate the algae. Indeed...

worms growing out of the head, help!!!!

You can keep the Apistos and the plants happy and without lots of stress. The only thing you really need if you're going to inject CO2 is a drop checker filled with pH solution and 4dKH solution (you can buy both of these pretty cheaply). This solution in the drop checker will be a nice light...

    Miraculous recovery???

It might be a prolapsed bowel. I know friends that have seen this in koi. If it is (rather than a parasiter problem) than there's not too much I think you casn do other than simply try to treat the fish as well as possiblt and see what happens.

worms growing out of the head, help!!!!

I'm not a million milers away from Darryl's assessment about the benefits of actively growing plants but I'd take a different approach to solve your issues. Your BBA is caused by the drop in CO2 levels so I'd keep the CO2 up and use a drop checker with 4dKH solution to ensure the CO2 stays...

worms growing out of the head, help!!!!

I've gotta agree with the above here. Sounds like a convenient way to sell you more meds. I think, if anything, you may have fed too much and got quite a lot of waste in the substrate? (Sorry if this is worng but that was my first thought) If I remember rightly Blackworms can bury down...

Fish collected in the village of itapeaçu ID thread

Well you've got a male agasizzi there but that's all the help I can be! If I had to guess I'd say the last one was some kind of Nannacara but that's simply because it looks a bit like a male N.anomala to me.

    Confused Apisto species

I think you've a male and female Panduro along with a female of another species. To be honest I'm not totally sure what that one is from the pic you posted but it looks a little elongated to be a cac to me and I think it might be an agasizzi. If you have any clearer pics of her then that would...

I have a question about cacatuoides triple red genetics

That paper (if it's the same one Im thinking of) is more about the role of colour in speciation rather than the inheritence of colours in captively bred forms. Not sure it'll help too much. Hull might be able to offer some ideas but when I was at York their work certainly used to centre...

    Alkaline water that is soft?

Have you tested the water after it has sat overnight and seen what the pH is. It can change quite a bit after that sometimes. I'm not familiar with what phosphate compound they add to the water to treat it but it seems you either have two options. First I'd check the level of phosphates in...

    pics of new pick ups.

No worries. I'll try and post some pics when I get time on the original thread on here where we discussed the albino kribs. Won't be for a few weeks though as I never seem to be home when the tank lights are on at the moment!!!

    Filter Idea

I've thought about a similar design to this using a Koralia too. They are a very efficient design and produce nicely diffused flow. I think you'd need to be very careful to make sure the media has very little restriction on the water's flow or there could be flow of water back through the...
