I instinctively agree with you, even though all of the steps that one reads in the standard procedures popularly published in "the hobby" seem to be counter to this. I don't really know anything, just saying what my inclination is.
Thanks for your thoughts, Gerald, you make good points. I am not overly worried about a little swing but I will mix some tap water in occasionally to give it some buffer. I also have some sea chem acid buffer I may use. I am pretty comfortable with water chemistry and pH swing from experience...
