I think it is a great idea to add more Apistogramma. If I may suggest, add a tetra species at the same time. This will allow the aggression to be shared.

Handsome guy, he looks like he has some orange flash in him also. Your blog has helped me learn about my a. cactuoides. My female turned yellow, so she laid eggs. The eggs are on the underside of a Telathera leaf. Thanks!
I received A. cacatuoides orange flash a week ago, healthy and happy. I put them in a 10 gallon planted tank with a light colored sand substrate. The females blend with the sand and seem to avoid excessive abuse from the male. Here are some pictures.
Thanks for the optimism. They have good feedback. As you know the bags are always deflated when the fish arrive do to the changes in pressure. It is still nerve racking.
