See if the store will let you swap him out now before he dies and start over, if not I would leave him in with the female and [ maybe ] they will mate before he dies and just swap him out after he goes.
While I aggrege with everything Bowluvr said, if I see a apisto/fish in the upper regains that's not normal for the fish than something's wrong and it get put into another tank, in my experience when this happens for me at least, it's a dead fish after a short time mostly from stress.
I would put a few in each small tank w/established tank water/sponge to kind of spread them out if your wanting to save some, any that get past the divider will more than likely be treats for the male. At this point I would remove about half to the small tanks and try leaving some with the...
I have had this very thing happen with one of my pair of Mac's I had, he would let her have them for about a week or so and then drive her away and after a week or so he would eat them, I would remove the male and see if she go's back to them or if to stressed she may eat them, but at least you...

I have some females that will not tolerate the male in the same tank after breeding and some that dont seem to mind, but the next batch all that might be reversed, with apisto females you just never know.
I have mutable females and they all take on a different color of orange/yellow, I have one older [about three yrs. old] that turns a nice golden yellow and some [younger females] that dont get much yellow at all when on eggs/fry.
If you have the eggs and a air pump you can get started, it's...
You might want to do another small w/c latter today, as far as the female, see if she comes out after the next w/c if not it may be time for body retrieval.
She looks plenty big enough, I have four females on fry [first batch] that are about 1 1/4". I use live food and good water to help mine along in promoting breeding. Good luck there one of my favorite.
