I always thought they are a good beginner species as already described. While they usually don't have a lot of color, a full grown male displaying is quite spectacular. I found them to be about the easiest species to breed and they were capable of vewry large spawns - 200 not uncommon. This...
Thanks Mike,
That's pretty much what I thought. It would sure be great if A. sp. Blauspiegel would someday be available. I never kept them at the time but your article in the BB was great.
There have never been many species from the Xingu which always surprised me because it's such a big...
Does anyone know if there are any Apistos coming from the Xingu? Will there ever be? It's been many years since I've seen any. Did the completion of the Belo Monte Dam have the negative impact feared? Does anyone know what the status is of the species that were found near Altimira? I don't think...
Can anyone ID this plant for me? I've been keeping it in my apisto tanks for at least 20 years and have never known what it is. It grows slowly but can get very tall. Older plants will reach from the substrate to the surface. It's common for plants to grow with their leaves above the water. I've...
I've had good luck using salt to control hydra. They die off at low enough salt levels that it won't harm the fish or plants. Start with 1/4 tsp per gallon and add more daily until the hydra vanish then just do regular water changes which will slowly remove the salt.
That fits with what I've been thinking.
It would be nice if we could trust that fish that are sold with a collection site attached were actually from that local. I don't worry about the fish from the collectors but once they are widespread in the hobby or develop a name within the hobby I...
MIke,
I've been wading through the paper for a couple of days and find it interesting and troubling. It seems like additional testing will likely show many different species. Any thoughts about how hobbyists will ever be able to know what we have?
You might try putting up a post at the Anubias Design Yahoo Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/anubiasdesign/
There are a number of specialists for most kinds of fish that might be able to help, including some very well known tetra experts.
I use straight RO for all my apistos and have for more than 20 years. That said, I have very complex habitats with substrate, many plants, driftwood and often leaves in all my tanks. I think this environment gives them what they need. The primary reason I use straight RO is that it is the...
Ted,
FWIW, This is the line of code that is triggering my Avast
"text/javascript" src="http://www.apistogramma.com/forum/clientscript/?g=1">
When I try to just run this line in my browser it comes up infected. Is this script serving ads? If so the problem could be in the ads that are being...
Anyone know if there are any good shops for dwarfs in D.C.? Or, serious hobbyists/breeders? I will be there all week next week and might have some free time.
Thanks
It has been said that the British army wore red coats so that, if they were shot, their opponent would not be able to tell that they were bleeding. I guess that explains why the Packers wear yellow pants
