    Pencil fish ID

A female N.. beckfordi - males are much more colorful. I had some as dithers for Apistogramma sp. Steel Blue. The pencils didn't bother the apisto fry; they spawned, & both species of young grew up in the same tank. I'm not sure why some people look down their noses at N. beckfordi; they're...

    Community tank breeding.

Most of the floaters are Ceratopteris siliquosa, AKA lace leaf water sprite. The structure of the leaves doesn't cut off as much light as common water sprite, plus they also look great planted in the substrate.

    Community tank breeding.

My cacatuoides juvies are F1, so it can't be inbreeding.

    Community tank breeding.

I have a cacatuoides brood with much greater size differences than the ortegai. Some are close to 2" while others are about the size of a month old fry. I stepped up water changes & removed the larger ones, but I'm begnning to think that they're permanently stunted.

    Taeniatus "bova" or Pelvicachroms Silviae?

The Bova location of Pelvicachromis kribensis look very similar to the Moliwe form. It's a bit difficult to tell by your photo, but your fish are probably P. silviae, possibly P. subocellatus & both males.

    Apistogramma spp. "Netz"

Beautiful male, showing a lot more yellow than my Netz/Alenquer ever did.

    Community tank breeding.

I couldn't resist the opportunity to obtain a pair of ortegai despite the lack of a proper breeding tank, so I made due with what I could during the lockdown. Some of the fry may have been picked off by the cardinals, but I never caught them in the act. They eventually learned not to venture...

    Community tank breeding.

I've somehow manages to raise up a good number of Apistogramma ortegai in a community tank containing cardinals, gold laser cories etc. The parents did an exemplary job keeping the other fish at bay. It IS possible, but I wouldn't recommend it.

    My first spawn! What next?

They all go bad eventually, but the warmer the temps the faster the process.

    My first spawn! What next?

I usually keep a few microworm culture going just in case I don't have BBS ready for an unexpected spawn. A word of warning - the cultures can spoil fairly quickly in hot weather & end up stinking to high heaven.

I have eggs! a. cacatuoides, first spawn

I feed microworms for the first week. I've noticed very young fry gorging on BBS & somehow damaging their swim bladders, becoming belly sliders.

After months waiting I got this: Flagcichlid

The other species known as the flag cichlid is Laetacara curviceps, which grows to 3"/8 cm. Mesonauta insignis gets considerably larger.

    A Ortegai ID

Apistos do great in Brooklyn tap water. I've kept and bred many species without any problems. Your fish looks very much like A. sp. Steel Blue, which is usually sold as A. borellii, A. agassizii or "Neon Head".

    A Ortegai ID

I noticed that the shop in Clifton NJ has A. ortegai on its current stock list - & A.kullanderi! They're usually pretty accurate when it comes to apistos, but your fish is definitely not an ortegai.

    My first Apisto!

I'd say it's a female of one of the line bred forms of A. agassizi, probably "double red".

    Hello from AZ

Unfortunately, when people see colorless juvies in a shop they'll usually pass them by, without realizing how beautiful they'll become when adult. I've been selling them online for the past 5 years, spreading them throuought the U. S.

Welcome to the site! I'm also a fan of N. anomala. When you get a male, try to get them NOT to breed!;)
