    I’m hopeful that I would know they were “steel blue” no matter what they were labelled as. Borellii are very distinctive and not easy to confuse with anything else, males and females.

    Unless you have a commercial need to raise fry for sale, I would allow the female to keep trying. Have you tried removing the male after spawning? Is there anything you could do to change the tank layout to see if that makes a difference? Good luck.

    N. Multifasciatus - sand

    Old thread alert. I have had a colony on N. multifasciatus for at least 20 years. They are in a 70 litre tank. As well as snail shells I use coral sand as a substrate. Helps buffer our soft Scottish water. When I do water changes, I add some magnesium sulphate and sodium bicarbonate.

    If you want to raise the fry, the safest thing to do is remove the male and any other fish with the fry.

    A 12 by 5 foot aquarium? Will you ever see Apistos in there? I’d go for Altum angels and a nice geophagus species. Maybe a large Aequidens too.

    Have you added any new blood in that time? I have had the same colony of N.multifasciatus for at least 20 years apart from about 3 others I added about 12 years ago. I see no signs of inbreeding as all fry look perfect. The colony in an 80 litre cube tank always self regulate the population to...

    I just squeeze out the sponges in tank water every couple of water changes. I never replace the sponges.
