Ok so recently a guy wanted to buy many of my A. cacatuoides fry from me. I refused him, because I happen to know he has a 65 gallon, and he plans on stocking many GBR and Apisto together in it with yo yo loaches.
His "bright idea" is that by having many dwarves the aggression will be spread...
My god Tom. Not only is that the best looking pebas I've ever seen, but I believe it may be one of the best looking apistos I have ever seen. That is an amazing fish!
You ever sell any of the fry from that beauty? =D
It is possible, but at the same time don't get your hopes up to much. Females can sometimes lay eggs only in the presence of other females. But if they hatch you have a surefire answer =D
It has also been said in the absence of males females can sometimes change sex!
You bring up some good points and information as always gerald.
The reason I add pure RO on a daily basis is because when this tank was set up it was not planned to be blackwater or to house a fish with such software requirements (my WC A. sp. abacaxis). It was meant as a breeding / fry...
1) temperature does affect reading but the meter I have has temp compensation. I got a new bucket of RO yesterday to test side by side, both were fairly similar in temp and one read 14 as the other read 250.
2) this is what I believe is happening but don't know how to change it lol.
3) I...
Hey guys,
so I'm just starting to get into dealing with TDS and understanding it. Up untill now I have always used PH/GH/KH as a measurement untill I found out how important TDS is and how it can differ from what you would expect.
So anyways, I always get buckets of RO on Sunday morning, and I...
My Apisto also dislike my otos lol. I have always assumed the same, that it is because of the stripe.
I only have one tank that houses otos, and it is my large display tank where I keep my males when they are being separated from females, so I can't speak much to them annoying the females, but...
My apologies then bbetta. It's one of those pet peeves of mine is all, I hate when people say a fish is a tank strain and doesn't need as specific of parameters! Perhaps I just misread, because as I stated at work and don't have very short breaks, usually I just skim through fast and try to...
I disagree with your thinking. Yes you could likely keep these fish in 50% RO and they may do ok depending on what your tap is.
Where I disagree though is that the fish being commercially bred makes any difference. Nature took years upon years to adapt these fish to be specialized to live in...
I suppose they likely can, especially with the quadruple red becoming more prominent. I just have never come across a sneaker male with that very prominent black stripe in the ventral fins, and I would guess that the feature is still a fairly accurate way to sex. Just not fool proof. However...
Sad to hear the mother began showing aggression Dave. Try a few methods I use, I have become quite good at catching apistos in heavily planted tanks as I sell mine, and Kevin can attest to them being planted.
Bottle trap method is good, but has never worked for me as my apistos couldn't find...
Oh no! Horrible to hear. But don't overly worry, I recently purchased a pair of wc A. sp. abacaxis and the male was so starved his back was severely hunched with a concave gut. He now is in excellent condition after only 2 weeks!
Interesting, I never considered it but I have 2 male cacatuoides currently. The youngest was a glowing orange color, very bright. Than one day he began to eat my cheery shrimp population, which he had never done before. It was fine by me as I put them there to be eaten anyways. At any rate...
Mike can obviously better explain but I believe what he meant by constant flow/change was to either have a drip system of RO water setup for this fish or do very constant water changes to keep water quality as tip top as possible as this species is very demanding of good quality water and far...
Just wanted to add in that this holds true for nearly all "shy" fish.
If they know they can easily escape predation, than why sulk in a corner all day?
You obviously gave him a very comfy environment and that's his way of saying thanks.
If they still have both pairs there tell me which you got. I liked the one in the lower tank where as an employee (don) argued that the pair in the higher tank was better.
I personally find fish in the agassizzi group to be easier than the nijsseni group, but not as easy to pair as those from the regani. But all fish are individuals and can act different than expected. For instance my wild caught A. sp. abacaxis spawned for me yesterday and the female is now...
