New to Apisto - gotten a baenschi

Hi, I ´ve bred wild Baenschi several times in water under 100 µS. Darrel´s way for testing water has worked for me fantastically because I´m a lazy aquarist. ;) Also, may I suggest a nice layer of leaf litter on the bottom of the tank. My Baenschi fry really like to dig deep in to the mulm.

    Filter or no filter

Hi, http://www.swisstropicals.com/about-us/ This guy seems to think that mattenfilters survive much longer in case of a power outage. I concur. I had a corner style mattenfilter without electricity for 48 hours. No side-effects that I´m aware of.

    Filter or no filter

Hi, In my opinion you can go without filtration but I prefer some form of water circulation. If I remember correctly, Bart Hazes from the forums has tanks without filtration.

Recently Added Sand to Apistogramma Tank (pic heavy post!)

Hi, There´s no such thing as a pic heavy post! I think your breeder box is fine as it is. Plenty of microfauna to feed on.

New Apistograma set up advise please

Hi, Plant roots keep aerating the sand substrate if you´re worried about that. Also, floating plants help immensely with the sense on security plus they are easy to prune and are really efficient in helping with keeping water quality up.

Hi, I faintly remember that the spots on the tail have something to do with it? My male has these spots. Mike W might have some info. Did you try to search for info around here? That´s a mighty handsome male btw! Do you have any females?

Hello from the Netherlands - Apeldoorn

Well, I only have 2 Nannostomus Marginatus (F0) there, so no predation expected. All of the fry from day one are still there.

Detritus, decaying plant matter, mulm, disintegrated catappa leaves

Hi, Never thought of that initial BOD spike. I sometimes add a lot of leaves on one sitting. Thanks Gerald! Mike W, care to share more pictures?

Detritus, decaying plant matter, mulm, disintegrated catappa leaves

Hi, My tanks has their bottom covered in detritus/mulm from leaf litter. Never had a spawn fail because of that. Think of nature. I have had spawns from cacatuoides/Nijsseni/hongsloi/abacaxis.
