Apistos do great in Brooklyn tap water. I've kept and bred many species without any problems. Your fish looks very much like A. sp. Steel Blue, which is usually sold as A. borellii, A. agassizii or "Neon Head".
I noticed that the shop in Clifton NJ has A. ortegai on its current stock list - & A.kullanderi! They're usually pretty accurate when it comes to apistos, but your fish is definitely not an ortegai.
Unfortunately, when people see colorless juvies in a shop they'll usually pass them by, without realizing how beautiful they'll become when adult.
I've been selling them online for the past 5 years, spreading them throuought the U. S.
Congratulations! They tend to do that...a lot!
I've seen some videos posted by Europeans of the Sierra Leone form. Apparently they're still available over there. The SL morph looks somewhat more elongated than the stockier Guinea morph, plus they lack the deep red eyes.
I was led to believe that the Guinea form was aggressive, but my 2 breeding pairs are dominated by Apistogramma paulmuelleri in a community tank. The thomasi spawn every week or so & some of the fry manage to avoid being eaten, thanks to a dense growth of Java moss.
I have newly free-swimming Anomalochromis thomasi fry in a community tank & Laetacara araguaiae young of about the same age in a species tank along with their parents. If I introduce some of the thomasi babies into the Laetacara tank, would they be accepted by the adults or be rejected?
I've had this female for several months now & she has turned out to be very undemanding & easygoing. I think she deserves a mate of her own species. Can it possibly be an A. cruzi Melgar?
The person I bought it from also had A. macmasteri. Could he have sent me one by mistake? This is the same guy who sold me A. paulmuelleri as A. ortegai.
