How long for Agassizii to form a pair after replacing female?

Remove the Serpae Tetras now. They are much like Pygocentrus nattereri(Red Breast Piranha) fry of the same size and will definitely devour any fry that may come in the future.

    24 gallon setup

Yes you can but if your desire is to breed then only choose one of the two species.

    Spare 2'

I wouldn't include any catfish but a few Pencilfish like Nannostomus eques would be fine. That is if breeding is your primary goal.

    Apisto colony

If your desire is to breed your A. boreelli in a large colony I recommend using a 125 gal tank. It may seem like too large a tank but it is not for true colony breeding. Otherwise I recommend using pairs in separate 10 gal tanks. Trios may also be possible as long as the fry are removed as...

    Borellii?

Here is a pair of A. borelli. Female is in breeding colors.

    Water Changes & Spawning?

Personally I believe in making at least two water changes a week changing about 2/3 of the water at a time and refilling with water of the same temperature and chemistry. Any water changing regime which maintains very high water quality is beneficial to keep, breed and raise Apistogramma spp.

Oops... Orange Flash X Double Red Coc. spawn

My photo only shows a few of the 155 A. cacatuoides I obtained from that spawn and they ran the gammut as Mike mentions above. That was my personal largest number of mature Apistogramma obtained from a single breeding. Ironically not me or anyone who bought them ever bred them. I don't know why...

    Female changed sex!!???

I agree with Mike. Are you 100% certain this is the same female? You said you had two females. If you lost track of which one was the proven female that you previously bred it is possible the other was a latent male or masculinized old female.

Oops... Orange Flash X Double Red Coc. spawn

Below is a photo of the progeny I obtained from breeding a Triple Red with the Gold/White form of A. cacatuoides. IMO, I think the White/Gold form arose from an Orange Flash strain.

    Nannostomus ID

I like your design using the craft mesh, PVC pipe and suction cups. It solves the problem of bonding dissimilar plastics you are using. I can guarantee that nylon fly screen allows free passage of all Nannostomus and other popular Characin species' eggs. I think both designs require about the...

Advice Regarding WC Apistos and Dithers.

The Neon Tetra will quickly grow to their full size and before then they are able to eat Apistogramma fry. The best dithers are fish of both small size over all, small mouths and strongly surface oriented. That is why I use Pencilfish(Nannostomus spp). There are a few other species used and I'm...

Mesh should be approximately between 1.0 mm and 3.0 mm. Nylon Fly screen is about 1.0 mm. It bonds very well to a plastic supporting structure like plastic fluorescent light diffusing grids which are sold in the USA at big hardware stores in 2 X 4 feet pieces. It is easily cut the diffusing grid...

Advice Regarding WC Apistos and Dithers.

Thanks Cooder, I really like those fish too. I think you are approaching this project well enough that unless you run into real difficulties with your breeding attempts your use of rain water and Cattapa leaves will suffice. The A. agassizi group are not the most difficult of Apistogramma spp to...

    Nannostomus ID

It is almost mandatory in my opinion that the breeders are well conditioned by generously feeding them live foods. Variety is best but brine shrimp nauplii will do. I also segregate the sexes for a few days prior to placing them in the spawning tank. Devising some way to prevent the fish from...

why are apistos seemingly so hard to find?

Not only these points but many shops lack the expertise to keep Apistogramma spp alive long enough to sell. You might ask your favorite shop if they can check with http://www.belowwater.com/. They also used to sell retail and ship to your door. With the exceptions of ramirezi and "Kribensis"...

Advice Regarding WC Apistos and Dithers.

Apistogramma cf. agassizi nets/net is among my favorites. They were the last species of Apistogramma I had. This was my male. You can make of the sleletal remains of a Cattapa leaf to the left. I always use Indian Almond leaves in my Apistogramma tanks. It doesn't matter very much whether they...

    Looking for A. borellii company

Hi DutchyIvo, Sorry but I did not bother to look at the various caves. However, L10a have a strong preference for narrow tubes or closed end tube caves of about 0.125 cm/1/2 inch inside diameter and about 15 cm/6 inches long. I have never seen them bother with exploring the inside of a typical...

    Apistogramma iniridae

I also prefer Apistogramma pertensis over A iniridae. While both are pleasantly understated beauties, I have to give A. pertensis the nod. BIG sail fin-like dorsal fin on the males and a bit more colorful. I have only found them once. I spotted 3 tiny juvenile Apistogramma among over 1000...
