Unfortunate Science experiment results. Apistogramma sp and cold temperatures.

So sad when this happens. I recently lost a lot of fish in one tank by accidentally filling it, just for a few minutes, with cold water. There was a problem with the water supply to the house, the tubes were slightly blocked but the water was initially coming out at the correct temperature, just...

I thought that as well, I didn't post anything earlier because I wasn't sure if it was cyanobacteria or not, but it does seem to have that sort of colour mixed in. I have occasionally had a little Cyanobacteria, always when nitrates are very low or zero. Once it seemed to disappear when I used...

    Dicrossus 420 L

I have some Echinodorus (not sure what species but they are basic green ones, but not the really big ones) that I planted in a tank with sand substrate, quite low light (often mostly covered with floating plants and stained with Indian almond leaves, so pretty dark, though not technically a...

    Need help sexing Apistogramma Agassizii

That could also happen if it was a female.

Funny that, I have beckford's pencilfish that are getting on for 3 years old and they have always been pretty peaceful. I also have some N. mortenthaleri which are reported to be very aggressive, but mine do not seem that bad, yes they spar sometimes, but do not seem to do any damage, and mine...

40g Breeder All Male Tank Questions

I am inclined to agree with MacZ though I do have very limited experience. A 40B is not very big I think? I once tried to keep a male agassizii and 3 cacatuoides (all wild) in a 120cm long tank (about 63 gallons). For a while it worked out OK, the dominant cacatuoides and the agassizii setting...

Apisto Cacatuoides Triple Red - General Breeding conversation

You can use a bottle trap to catch the adults as well, if you do need to catch the male. You just cut the top off a plastic water bottle, put the top part inside the bottom the other way round making a funnel entrance. Use a turkey baster to put live food inside the trap. I recently tried this...

Is oak safe for use in the aquarium with dwarf cichild and 'blackwater' conditions ?

Yes you could use glass. But the epoxy is transparent and makes a glass-like surface over wood, I believe that it completely seals the wood so that nothing can leach out and the wood won’t rot. However that would be worth checking and glass may be easier in the long run.

Is oak safe for use in the aquarium with dwarf cichild and 'blackwater' conditions ?

You can make a box with wood and seal it with epoxy resin. That is how we made the top filters for our biggest tank.

    New To Breeding, advice wanted.

I had a wild caught agassizii that lived only about 18 months, and some wild cacatuoides for just over two years.

    nannacara aureocephalus

I also have KH 0-1 from the tap and have not experienced any pH crashes as far as I am aware.

    Hello from Japan

The tank looks very nice, but make sure you leave some patches of open sand that the Apistogrammas can sift through.

    Nuchal humps?

Mature Laetacara araguaiae males are relatively small as cichlids go and have pronounced nuchal humps.

That sounds lovely, I think it would be OK to have pencilfish as well as tetras, as the pencilfish tend to keep near the top. I will let someone else advise as to numbers of each.

The obvious tetras would be neons or cardinals, there are also some pencilfish and a couple of hatchetfish. There are many more but I don't know how available they would be. This paper might be useful for you, if you go right to the end there is a list of fishes, those from the first column (At)...

    Concerned about my new Apistogrammas

A quick update, the male I almost gave up on as dead is fine now and his tail has started to grow back. I recently moved him from the hospital tank to the tank with the pencilfish and ruby tetras. Having first moved the little agassizii from there, who I managed to catch in 15 minutes using a...

I am not familiar with L. fulvipinnis, but if they are anything like L. araguaiae I think they could get too big for a 20 gallon tank. My male araguaiae are easily 10cm (4") and very chunky and deep bodied (bigger than anything I have found mentioned in the literature). I think Apistogrammas...

I don't understand this? Just Copella nattereri is listed for Guyana. I have some papers on Copella classification if they of any help? One is by Marinho, the other by Zarske?? But I am not sure exactly what you are trying to find out? The Marinho one is too big to upload it is: Taxonomic...
