Looking for 1 or 2 male a. wolli

I have a 29 with 2 f0 (wc) females and 3 or 4 f1 females and am looking for 1 or 2 males. Not 100% sure yet how i would handle them - the two f0 females i had came to an agreement around a male but i think the f1s will cause a lot of fighting - so will probably put the male with the f0 female in...

    It’s finally happening

I run my lights from 8am to 5pm with 1 hour ramp up and 1 hour ramp down so 7 hours of full intensity - and it seems to be a good balance for most (all?) of my aquariums. I also run most of my lights on the dwarf cichild around 1/3 to 1/4 intensity so rather low and find it is more than enough...

    It’s finally happening

To my knowledge there is no new blood. All the captive bred ones come from a very small set of parent fishes that were brought to (i think germany) via a collector. They have never been imported nor are they regularly collected.

    It’s finally happening

Yea - fyi provide a nice clean stone for it to deposit eggs. Though I suppose if it can't find one a nice piece of drift wood will work - mine always laid eggs in the same spot which was right next to the right side - i swear they were fertile as i thought i saw wriggling even if i never...

    It’s finally happening

My experience with IB is hiding is less of an issue then with dwarf child that are polygamous - ignoring that these fishes have very low level of aggression to begin with they do not suffer from the male/female cycle between breeding. However i suspect very low ph is required for successful...

    It’s finally happening

Just remember they are pair forming so if mixed sex the odd person will be unwelcomed.

    Befuddled by ph

Well it is a bit of a curiosity though given the small amount of ions make a big difference in ph that might be part of the issue. Btw one thing that occurred to me is that the discus tank has lower ph because of the higher temperature. While i'm not sure 6 degrees make a big difference in co2...

    Befuddled by ph

Well the discus tank is 180 gallon and for some strange reason i don't fully understand it consistency around 4.7 as cross checked by two meters. Yea the meters are not accurate but given the large margin of error i give them i still suspect it is below 5. This is 180 gallons. Correct api only...

    Befuddled by ph

So i skimmed the link you posted and it is enough to make you dizzy with the change in nitrate impacting ph. It begs the question if my tank is over populated (nitrate production) and the plants are eating most if not all the nitrate - still is nitrate ph like co2 ph - not really a major change...

    Befuddled by ph

One correct i said tds 30-35 the actual hardness is EC 30-35 so tds of 15 or 16.

    Befuddled by ph

The literature suggest the pictured fish in the first post require ph below 5.5 and below 5 is better for successful breeding. While my hand held meter is quirky as you said and i expect it to be quirky the liquid i believe are reliable though as mike/darrel said it only takes a small amount of...

    Befuddled by ph

The aquarium in question has a stable tds of 30-35; so quite soft. I was just a bit surprise it had higher ph then all the sister tanks around it (approx 15). It is this one; for some weird reason the discus tank consistently read ph around 4.7 (ec 20) and the 'balckwater tank' in the blackwater...

id request - a. gibbiceps or something else (?cf uaupesi) ?

Is the blue spot seen at birth or something that develops as the fishes age? I purchased 8 for a 100 gallon aquarium (mostly in an attempt to get mixed sex; then really wanting 8 but they are said to be relatively docile); but some are quite young.

    Befuddled by ph

So should i assume it is lower or higher or just ignore the reading all together?

    Befuddled by ph

This is more of a commentary but after I put my foot in my mouth and assumed the ph was super low only to have it measured out at 6.4 i went and spot checked 5 aquariums and all of those measured below 6 (more precisely hte api test kit was bright yellow which is the lowest it measured @ 6.0)...

id request - a. gibbiceps or something else (?cf uaupesi) ?

Thanks - Yea the vertical markings i know about (though i don't know if the females have those); one of the fish that is quite large has the strong vertical bars but was a little concern about mixed species import. Do the females have vertrical markings ?

id request - a. gibbiceps or something else (?cf uaupesi) ?

For my education what was the key identifier on species. The pictures show 2 different fish - the last one was near the front and the other two pictures (same fish i think - though there were 2 fishes side by side) are in the middle of the aquarium near the edge - it is 48x24 (inch).

id request - a. gibbiceps or something else (?cf uaupesi) ?

These were sold as a. gibbiceps (possibly as females): I realize the images are a bit blurry and will try for better one - but how would i distinguish between a. gibbiceps and cf uaupesi; tom's website talks about pointers on the male but not the female. One thing i think is that these two...

    Plants in Softwater tank

Last post for the record i doubled check the numbers - the api test said the ph was around 6.4 and the ec pen said the ec was 32. The ph pen said 5.9 to 6.1 (it kept oscallating) but in the discus tank it said 3.9 and the discus monitor said 4.6 so i think it was reading low. So i will go with...

    Plants in Softwater tank

I surrender but i want to stress for @Phil_1983 that what makes the plants do well (specifically soft water plants) is the low ph as it allows them to suck up nutrients more efficiently (at least that is what i read). As for my actual ph - i have no clue what it is - it could be as low as 4.5 -...
